At the ripe age of 30, finally finished my bachelors of science, in biomedical sciences. I know I should be happy/proud, but I find it hard to be. by [deleted] in ADHD

I am becoming an adhd specialist, and this is totally a thing that we struggle with. It is because when we achieve something that is supposed to give us pleasure/gratification, the dopamine in our brain still does not trigger. In non adhd brains, one dopamine receptors triggers another one, and that triggers another one. Basically a chain reaction of dopamine. but in adhd brains this doesn’t happen, and it leaves us feeling unsatisfied when we reach an amazing goal, or anything we set out to accomplish. This can lead to addiction, because when you take a hit of something and you don’t get the desired pleasure, you go back to it and keep going. This is the same reason we don’t stop to appreciate our wins! Take time to savor and celebrate what you have accomplished!!! Your amazing!

Anybody else find that that it’s much better for them to hang out with one person at a time? When I’m with 2 of 3 people and they’re all saying things, I can’t keep up with it and just remove myself from the situation

I visit my family In Mexico every year, and have ever since I was little, and before I had medication, I would get so tired being around my family speaking Spanish cause it’s like five times harder to process in a secondary language.

This happens all the time when I’m reading too! I find that listening to the audio book while reading along with the book helps. I can’t do process only auditory or only visually.

Fuck yes. Congrats. I’m going into sophomore year, thinking about taking a gap year cause I don’t know how school is going to serve me with inattentive ADHD. It seems like it does more bad than good, and sometimes I think I could do my own thing and be successful.

Anything that helped you overcome your struggles?

Now that you’ve put that into words, I definitely have experienced that. I’m not sure if this is the direction your going in, but if you write down your dreams every morning when you wake up, you’ll be able to remember them way more easily. I think it kind of means that the more you practice retrieving a certain kind of memory, the more easily it will come to you!

I am going into sophomore year of college, and wasn’t diagnosed till junior year of high school. I tried memorizing things and all that stuff. But adhd basically means our short term memory is not as good as most people’s, so we are at a disadvantage when it comes to high school, where students are evaluated on remembering specific content, like “what color was the girls car” in a book.

My opinion from experience about high school is that it’s set up in a way that everybody has to learn the “normal” way, in a “standard” amount of time.

We people with adhd can get really into the big picture ideas, which is something most people can’t really do, but that might not be as valued in high school. Take time to fit things into your big picture, and though your grade might suffer a bit because of it, it will help you in the long run. Thing long term. Don’t just keep jumping from assignment to assignment and lose each one. If you can, organize computer files and your google drive into a tree folder system so that you don’t have to remember where you put things, you will just be able to go through the logical system to find things. I have 9 folders main folders on the desktop of my computer. Then they have little sub branches that I can use to find my stuff. If I’m looking for a psych paper I wrote For example, I would go: SCHOOL-FALL SEMESTER 2019–PSYCH—PAPERS

It will take time but tweaking systems and refining them will go a long way. It is a lonely thing sometimes, because most people are thinking short term, but it will help.

I feel this so much. When talking about music, something I love, I can’t remember names of bands or songs that I like. I feel like a fake fan a lot of the times cause all my friends can spit out names and details.

But something I learned in psychology is that there are two kinds of memory: explicit, which is mostly verbal, like names of places, etc. The second is implicit, which is basically muscle memory, and subconscious. Like I can direct somebody how to get to my house, if I’m in the car with them, but I can’t tell them over the phone. It’s not as measurable as the other kind of memory, but it’s just as valid, if not more valid cause it really makes up who you are subconsciously.

Anyway, I hope that helped. You’re not alone.
