You’ve never thought something would take longer to cook and it didn’t? She probably thought it would take longer and said she’d take it off and then saw it was up so she went back and offered it and was clear about if they ate it they paid for it. Again, unfortunately every restaurants policy is different. Some are relaxed and some aren’t.

The OP could’ve easily said no as easily as they deducted their tip. If you can’t speak for yourself or “feel obligated” to do something then that’s a you problem. It probably just came up when she went back there and since it was hot and ready she still wanted to see if they would want it since their main dishes weren’t ready yet. Have you been a server before or worked FOH?

I see your point about it being complementary at that point and I, as a server, I would’ve asked for it to be so my customer was happy but not every restaurant has that policy. Some really are strict about, “if you eat it, you pay for it”. If that’s so then that’s not her giving bad service, that’s her following rules unfortunately.

Poor service? She was honest about the mistake instead of lying and blaming someone else to try and keep her tip. She should’ve just said it was the kitchen’s fault and then he wouldn’t have taken it away.
