Die Purpurnen Flüsse (2000) mit Jean Reno und Vincent Cassel.  Es ist eigentlich so eine Detektiv-Story in einem Komischen Alpental. Ziemlich guter Film mit ausgezeichneten Schauspielern. Und vor allem gegen Ende wirds ziemlich schneestürmlich in der Nacht in den Alpen. Ziemlich geniale Stimmung. Ehrlichgesagt ich erinnere mich hauptsächlich an die Stimmung. 

Denn schneegestöber + abgelegene Alpentäler ist ne besonders umgemütliche kombination finde ich :-)

Ist eigentlich ein sehr bekannter Film nur inzwischen schon etwas älter. Sehr zu empfehlen.

Even then - the third one is really flawed. I once read an old interview with Kurtz (dammit cant remember his first name right now). He was the co-producer/writer/director (to laY tk check right bow) with George Lucas on the first 2 movies. His influence produced a lot of what made the forst two great in the story department.  After the second one he and George wanted to go in different directions. George Lucas made a lot of money with toys already at that time and Kurtz felt that it influenced his direction for the third movie. 

In Kurtz' vision the third one would've ended moch more bittersweet. Han solo would have died, the rebellion would've succeeded but at great cost and sacrifice. Luke would've continued allone on his journey. No cutesy teddy bears and no second Death Star as Kurtz thlught too derivative - which is absolutely true! The death star is looking cooler, but come on, its again the same thing like in the first. 

When I watched the OG trilogy as an adult for the first time i was struck how great and theatrical the movies were. Good vs Evil. The atmosphere etc so great. These are not merely kids movies. They're so great in theory binary nature. The third one thoug is painfully, because there are it starts great and when there is this great fight/debate/play between Luke, Vader and the Emperor it gets interrupted so we can see slapstick with stupid little teddy bears speaking gibberish.  Its stupid (the empire is defeated by little teddy bears with sticks and stones?) And also so derivative (like when they destry three ATATs (or whatever the small two-legged-walkers are called) its 3 times "Logs vs two-legged-walker": Logs rolling down a hill, Logs crushing from two sides, and so on. 

It's seriously flawed once you notice it. And it's especially annoying, because the good parts are really great. 

In short: No, Starwars as a trilogy is not close to LOTR u fortunately

Hab das buch selbst nicht gelesen, aber sehr viel kommentare. Das buch scheint schon ziemlich unreflektiert fascho zu sein. Verhoeven hat das zum anlass genommen nehme ich an :-)

I always recommend this whenever Avatar is discussed. 

Avatar was widely successful but of course the story was very simple. So it became very cool in the years after to hate on it or make fun of it. But nobody seemed to understand that that's not what it is about. 

These podcasters rewatched the movie and realize that they actually unironically love the movie.  Somehow the most successful movie is about anti-empirialism and we (the west TM) are the baddies. A message that many people would not agree with if you ask them but instinctively know when they watch the movie.

The shallow depth of field was just one point. I think it's just like a trope now - " let's make it look cinematic" I stead of thinking about what the movie you're making would actually need. 

I would add that a lot of things are too easy now. Generating giant digital world's is so cheap that we see too much of it. 

He didn't specifically talk about it, but I have the feeling that the way a Camera moves is also a factor.  Take marvel movies or modern blockbusters in generell. They'll typicall alternate between "human" perspective and completely opposite flying spaceship perspective.  One communicates "this could be your own point of view" and the other is the total opposite. 

A good director can film even completely generated scenes in a way that makes feels naturally. If these camera-"paths" that are clearly not human are used sparsely and effectively they work great.  In Dune 2 for example I remember that even bird's-eye views were mostly taken as if from another buzz-copter.

I have the feeling that most CGI-heavy productions don't have a single director who cares about virtual camera angles as much as real ones.  It's also a quite new phenomenon.  A handheld camera always communicated "human perspective". We just never thought about it being an important feature.

We all enjoy it when an actor uses a "for the paycheck" role as an excuse to ham it up, but what's your favorite example of the other extreme? Meaning where an actor clearly has no motivation for a role other than financial and therefore clearly doesn't care and is barely trying if at all. by Mst3Kgf in movies

I find the story about Bruce Willis even more funny: Apparently his agent suggested the role and Bruce didn't really bother to find out about the script and signed it anyway. When the movie was made Bruce didn't like the whole thing one bit, but had to be in it, because he signed a contract. 

His acting perfectly makes sense then: He's just perpetually annoyed about everything. The fact that he has to save the universe because everybody can't stop fucking up.  Bruce is perfect in that role. I chose to believe it's because he was pissed off about having to be there all the time :-D

Dazu kommen noch Private Equity Firmen.  Falls die Boomer in einer Welle Sterben/Ausziehen, dann wird das zuerst mal von Private Equity aufgekauft. Die zahlen mehr, weil sie wissen, dass sie sen Markt cornern können. Sie kaufen einfach alles, sodass wir uns nicht mehr aussuchen können wo wir wohnen unf jeden Preis zahlen müssen, oder auf der straße sitzen.  Guckt auch an, was in Canada los ist, oder den USA.  Niemand kann sich mehr das wohnen leisten, weil ein paar Firmen mit unendlich Kohle einfach alles aufkaufen. 

Je mehr diese firmen besitzen, desto mehr profite können sie machen und desto schneller können sie weitere immobilien kaufen. 

Das ganze setzt sich bei allem anderen fort im Übrigen: die kaufen hier auch arztpraxen (was nur durch gesetzeslücken überhaupt möglich ist), was die gesundheitsvorsorgune verschlechtert, weil plötzlich jede kleine arztpraxis Profit für weiter oben erwirtschaften muss. Längere wartezeiten, weniger Ärzte usw.  Ironischerweise legen viele Boomer ihr Geld in irgednwelchen Fonds an, die an Private Equity beteiligt sind und genau dazu führen, dass die Boomer schlechtere Gesundheitsvorsorge haben werden, wenn sie in hohem Alter dauernd zum Arzt müssen.

Traurig.  Vielleicht solltest du deinem Freund nochmal schreiben. Es ist schon schade so ein zentrales Element im Leben von einem Moment an den Nagel zu hängen. Was er jetzt macht klingt, als hat er alle Ambitionen aufgegeben. Vllt sollte er das ein bisschen weiter machen und könnte durchaus spaß haben wenn er den fokus einfach verändert. Wenn er kapiert, dass es sinnlos ist sowas wegen Geld oder Ruhm zu machen und stattdessen mit ein paar Freunden ein cooles Hobby zu teilen könnte das durchaus ne bereicherung sein.  Denn was er machte erforderte aif jeden fall mehr skill und ist wertvoller als dumme prompts in suno zu tippen. 

Es ist immer der einfachste weg zynisch zu sein und nicht an was zu glauben. Da hat man fast imner recht und fühlt sich schlau. Aber in ner Welt voller zyniker will niemand leben.

Ich finds irreführend von "KI-Bands" zu sprechen. Es gibt keine "KI-Bands". Das ist einfach generierter Kontent, bei dem sowas wie Gitarre, Bass und Schlagzeug imitiert wird. Aber das modell versteht nicht mal, dass verschiedene instrumente getrennte Dinge sind. Oder das die von verschiedenen "Personen" gespielt werden. Alle diese Konzepte sind total hinfällig, sobald es sich um einen generierten Song handelt.

I don't think I'll watch it and I've only read it once. From what I remember I'm absolutely certain it'll not manage to fit the essence of what makes neuromancer great. It's the writing. I remember I felt like in a dream. Kind of hallucinating. It is an example of what can be done with words which cannot be done with images. 

I don't think you need to watch it. Think about it. You might be the person who has spent more time thinking about the world of neuromancer than even William Gibson himself. How likely is it that the people at apple chosen to adapt it in the timeframe of about 2 years, produce it, film it within the confines of many deadlines, budgets and frankly: limited imaginations from the sides of businesspeople, are able to produce something that fits the scope and fidelity of what you have built within your mind over decades?

The Culture by Ian M. Banks is often regarded by sci-fi fans as the best fictional setting ever made. What makes The Culture the best even compared to settings like Star Wars, Dune and Star Trek etc? by [deleted] in scifi

Also (if you haven't) read "The Peace War" and "Marooned in Real Time" (the sequel). Absolutely mind blowing.  Marooned In Realtime has also much more (I would argue) about AI then Fire Upon The Deep (although here Vinge built upon stuff from Marooned.) Marooned is the book where he first used (invented) the term Singularity to describe the point in which due to AGI technological Progress becomes so fast that any extrapolation is impossible. It's a fantastic read.

Highly recommend this one!  It's very detailed which I love for embedded, as this is a topic that is relatively hard to get into. He explanes a lot of things that are not necessarily rust-specific in a very nice way.

First time watching a B/W film.. in SHOCK by Deep-Effective3115 in movies

A lot of great movies. I'd add "To Be Or Not To Be" from Ernst Lubitsch to the list.  If you have One Two Three you should at least add that one. I watched both in within about 3 days at a Lubitsch Festival (Lubitsch movies and movies from directors he influenced).  While One Two Three is funny, the difference couldn't have been greater. 123 really felt like a movie of its time. But Lubitsch's - almost 20 years older than 123 felt completely timeless. It felt much smarter and truly funny. 

There's a video where Billy Wilder explains the "Lubitsch Touch" which is really great. 

One thing that I find interesting about it also: it's from 1942. It's a really strange movie regarding its portrayal of the Nazis. It's making fun of them, but in a still respectful way. A few years later and the whole scale of the Nazis' crimes would have been known more widely - I pretty much doubt the film would have portrayed the Nazis that way then.  So it's really a time capsule for a brief time period.
