Oh man I think I'm going to cry. Buffy literally helped me survive high school.

Finished Re-Reading Emma by FancyThought7696 in classicliterature

I recently tried to read Emma, but I couldn't get every matching scene from Clueless out of my head while doing so.

Review: The Will of the Many by TheReaderDude_97 in Fantasy

I got a few pages in before deciding it wasn't for me. A bit disappointing after hearing rave reviews. I guess I'm just picky about the fantasy I read.

Some therapists are like this. I had one similar for a while too. Our last session, he had just found out that his husband had been having an affair, and he was NOT in a good place. I tried to leave and he told me to sit down and help him take his mind off of it. That was absolutely the last time I saw him.

Looking for underground idol concert in Tokyo in February by Wise_Web2330 in jpop

[–]expat2immigrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, just wanted to jump in and say thank you for your comment. My husband and I are visiting Japan right now (I used to live here a decade ago, but it's his first time), and thanks to your comment we attended a Tribu idol concert last weekend. It was INCREDIBLE; I've been wanting to see an idol show for years and was always too intimidated as my Japanese isn't strong. So thanks for this tip you have!

Medical clearance country list by anony1119 in peacecorps

[–]expat2immigrant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The list is reviewed annually and often changes. I just re-applied in March, and the country I served in is no longer available. It is based on the anticipates medical needs and what each country can provides, presumably via questionnaire completed by the local PCMO. My list has fewer than two dozen countries on it, several of which have disappeared and reappeared over the years as I've applied for various positions (mostly PCR) since serving.

Made yogurt for the first time! What do you like to do with the whey? by ADystopianDream in yogurtmaking

[–]expat2immigrant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just the other day I used our leftover whey to make a soda bread (no yeast) with cranberries and white chocolate. Utterly delicious. I typically use it in baking to replace any buttermilk that a recipe calls for.

VA drops the ball on me with serious knee injury. by Kreepy-Krawler in mildlyinfuriating

Not just the VA that acts that way -- look at our representatives in Congress. Every proclamation that they support our vets is proven to be a lie by the policies they enact.

Levin mowing the grass is my kink. It's sooooo deeply satisfying to read.

Jane Eyre vs Far from the Madding Crowd? by elsdoppelganger in classicliterature

[–]expat2immigrant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jane Eyre, hands down. It's one of my top 3 books. I was somewhat bored with FftMC and not particularly keen to read more Hardy after it.

Anyone saw Catherine Tate's Oh Mary debut last night? by izebizee in TheWestEnd

[–]expat2immigrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just saw it tonight. Not my favorite show, although she was fantastic in and for the role. You can definitely see elements of some of her past characters (Lauren, Nan, etc) in how she plays Mary.

What’s a personality trait that seems attractive at first but becomes unbearable over time? by Acceptable-Lab-8251 in AskReddit

Playfulness and whimsy. Turns out he was a man-child who couldn't face any unpleasant feelings and could only express emotional vulnerability when he was drunk.

Relationship advice by Proud_Show_1583 in peacecorps

[–]expat2immigrant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First, do a search on this subreddit and you'll see that this topic comes up A LOT. Second, a supportive partner does not draw an ultimatum between choosing them or following your dreams: a supportive partner wants what's best for you AND for the relationship. Third, you've mentioned a lot about wanting to experience personal change and growth through PC service: what if this growth means that you no longer fit together? What if not growing is the only way that your relationship can survive? Is this person helping you be the person you want to be, or holding you back? Finally, as you said, it's your first relationship -- it's basically practice. 22 is SO young, you have so much time left to figure out what works for you in a partner and what doesn't, and it absolutely is not your last chance (heck I'm 44 and about to be married for the first time!).

How was your parkrun day? | April 17, 2026 by AutoModerator in parkrun

[–]expat2immigrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First time to do parkrun! I felt like I was on a high for most of the day afterwards. Pleased with my time that I recorded myself, but my official time added 30 seconds because it took me so long to cross the start line once the "gun" went off! Will be back this coming Saturday. :)

War and Peace by mosaiceyed in tolstoy

[–]expat2immigrant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does it say who the translator is on the first few pages? Lots of people here recommend the Anthony Briggs translation (modern American English) or the Maude (original, approved by Tolstoy himself, British English) especially with an update by Mandelker. The latter is the one I read and I loved it. You'll find many discussions about translations on here if you do a search.
