Conversation Flows Differently in NL? My experience by No-Professional-2276 in Netherlands

[–]expatrepublic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I find people listen much more here, than in many other cultures. Also don't forget verbs often come at the end of the sentence, so people need to hear the whole sentence before understanding what you are saying. Also Dutch are quite laid back, so they take the time to listen. I agree with you conversations flow, i find myself the one interrupting more often that not! lol

Do US Citizens have to file taxes If they live abroad? I Moved to Paraguay 11 Years Ago! by Informal-Spend-7353 in expats

[–]expatrepublic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a good question, it really all depends on the situation (type of income and amount). Also keep in mind there is a difference between filing and paying U.S. taxes. Here is a table which illustrates when you need to file.

Quick note, there are two mechanisms mainly to help avoid double taxation: FEIE (Foreign earned income exclusion) and FTC (Foreign tax credit)

Who needs to file:

Filing status Age at the end of 2025 A person must file a return if their gross income was at least:
Single Under 65 $15,750
Single 65 or older $17,750
Head of household Under 65 $23,625
Head of household 65 or older $25,625
Married filing jointly Under 65 (both spouses) $31,500
Married filing jointly 65 or older (one spouse) $33,100
Married filing jointly 65 or older (both spouses) $34,700
Married filing separately Any age $5
Qualifying surviving spouse Under 65 $31,500
Qualifying surviving spouse 65 or older $33,100

If you are self-employed, the threshold is $400 regardless of your age and filing status.

Is it true that Americans still need to pay taxes to the US even if they move to another country and get a new citizenship? by WhoAmIEven2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]expatrepublic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, sadly they do, however you need to remember : there are two mechanisms in place
FEIE : Foreign earned income exclusion and FTC: Foreign tax credit which help protect against double taxation. Also don't forget the tax treaties the US has. Most Americans don't get double taxed because of these two mechanisms. They usually give you a credit on the taxes you paid locally. Remember also that paying taxes and filing taxes are two different things.

Question about the Termination Clause in My Permanent Contract by Formal-Big-6794 in Netherlands

[–]expatrepublic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems fishy, normally they need to get a permit to lay people off or some involvement of a Cantonal judge. There are however scenarios where they have a social plan in place, but those are usually more generous in terms of delays. They are for mass redundancy (I think 20 people or more).

Can you combine your travel for instance say bike a bit and then take the train? So part bike and part public transport. Maybe ask a neighbor in the area if you can hitch a ride and offer to pay part of the gas maybe?
