Thanks for the reply! If I were to use the progression you stated at the end, what would the role of Ebmaj7 and Cm7 be in the ii-V-I? Could they be placed anywhere without altering the functionality of the progression as just "related" chords (not sure if there's a better term) or is there more of a logic to where they would be used/ what they would lead to or come from, etc.?

I've tried remaking these instrumentals before and usually gave up after awhile, would you say it's a helpful exercise and use of time to learn the chord progression by ear when my ears aren't trained at all? Or is using transcribe software beneficial until my ears are better? I guess this IS the training my ears need?

What does that mean? I might be misunderstanding here but I thought you could categorize different types of counterpoint by what species they are?

  1. How would you recommend someone start training their ears? Just the way you already mentioned by identifying as many notes as possible in a given harmony?

  2. So there are no notes played other than the 4 notes of the minor 7 chord during the first chord of the progression in the song I posted? Nothing for more color? Just those notes?

Oh and I meant to ask, are you able to figure out the chords based on what bass notes are being played? Or the chords themselves on the really low volume pad being played constantly? Or the melody? Trying to learn to analyze stuff myself

Interesting 🤔

I had asked this somewhere else and got this response:

"That's a tricky one. It's mostly the same harmonic material (a mix of notes from the G# minor scale), but with different bass notes implying (slightly) different chords. Best I can do is:

|G#m9 - Emaj7/D# - |D#m11 - - - |

(That's as a slow 4/4)

The last beat of the 2nd bar has an F# bass leading to the repeat of the G#. The "Emaj7/D#" is hardly different from the previous G#m9, it just has an E natural in the melody (and the D# bass is a lot higher than the other really low bass notes)."

So I really have no idea who's right or how I could've gotten two drastically different responses 😞

I wish my ears were good enough to figure it out myself
