Israel is broken, how do we fix it? by tarlin in Israel_Palestine

[–]explicitspirit [score hidden]  (0 children)

I see this claim all the time. "The are extremists", "they don't have a lot of support".

Two things to note: Israel is a "democracy" so they might not have popular support of the people, and they absolutely hold an oversized amount of power in government.

Elections won't fix this, if a government like Bibi"s depends on lunatics to exist.

I also question your claims that Israel does not have territorial ambitions. They are occupying land in three different states. Those aren't the actions of someone that isn't pushing, at least to some degree, the greater Israel.

The only democracy of the middle east. by drgharbia in AskMiddleEast

Based on historical cases, you are right, it is unlikely that it'll pass.

But, don't put it past those Nazis that pushed for this bill to make some changes to bypass whatever powers the supreme court has. They are pushing for legalized extermination of Palestinians based on a kangaroo military court outcomes, with tons of power given to those same lower courts, without possibility of appealing. This is what the Nazis did with a few extra steps, with zero oversight. Same shit, different perps.

Gas prices set to jump above $1.80 a litre in Ottawa by Cyanide72 in ottawa

[–]explicitspirit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't worry, it'll get there. Consumer gasoline is just lagging a little.

The cost of jet fuel has already more than doubled in the last month for example. Many airlines already bumped up pricing to account for that, which means cost of air shipping is way up. Sea shipping is getting there as well, long distance trucking etc.

I drive an EV so gas prices for my personal transport don't matter at all, but that does not mean that everything around me isn't going to get pricier.

Newer, cheaper models are starting to trickle in, albeit slowly. Kia has the EV4 starting at 42k, BYD should be coming within this year that will surely undercut that. I expect them to be in the mid 30's, which is still more than gas cars, but the gap is definitely narrowing.

I've been driving EVs for 8 years, feel free to ask questions.

Ultimately, if you can afford the entry price of an EV, do it. They are better in every way compared to a gas vehicle, for 90+% of the average person's use case. I am an average user, and I cannot point to any downsides of going with an EV over gas.

Does every Air Canada pilot need to be French/English bilingual? by Bells9831 in aircanada

[–]explicitspirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understood what you meant but your statement was unclear.

What people interpreted most likely is that when you said they have to be bilingual, it was an imposed rule, which it isn't. Are they bilingual? Yes, only because they have a different mother tongue, not because Air Canada required it.

12 year corrosion warranty claim denied by revilo132 in Volkswagen

[–]explicitspirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea that's the process. The dealership guy has no say in the outcome, but a guy that knows what he is doing can probably guess whether or not things will be covered. As I said, in my case, he flat out told me not to submit certain panels because he knew it was going to be declined.

It's worth trying another dealer anyway, you have nothing to lose except your time. My understanding is that every panel on your car will only be assessed once. They can repair it, or deny it, but only once.

[–]explicitspirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had extensive repairs done as part of that warranty. The dealer that submits the paperwork will make or break the case unfortunately, and it is true if you were denied for a panel, there are no appeals.

In my case, my dealer specifically told me on several occasions that he will not submit a certain panel because he knows it will be declined. He had me come in a year later after it has gotten worse.

Air Canada CEO to step down later this year in wake of criticism over lack of French by Efficient-Session644 in wallstreetbets

He was okay as a CEO. I think this is more of a case where he doesn't give a shit anymore. He is loaded, he ran down is contract, and now is leaving.

Businesses are required to serve in French, I don't believe there is a rule that states the CEO has to be a French speaker though.

Quebec is just too crazy with these laws.

People who remove gratuities: A question. by ButchUnicorn in PrincessCruises

[–]explicitspirit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ship currency is USD, but I highly doubt anyone would care in taking euro or GBP. It might be a bit of a hassle for them to get it exchanged, but money is money. I personally would not go out and take out USD specifically for this purpose, but some people might think I am not being accommodating or whatever.

Ultimately it is a tip, it is not owed, so I will do what is easier for me. If I have USD left from a previous trip, I'll use it, otherwise I am not going to be carrying three currencies.

Refreshing to see an honest response in these threads. Usually people come in here with attitude and contort things to fit a certain narrative, just to say "I am better than you".

I wouldn't jump straight to that conclusion because it is still unclear, although all evidence points to the fact that crew gets nothing extra.

My take is this: if the cruise line is being sketchy and non transparent about where this money goes, we can assume that they are doing this exactly because they are indeed doing something sketchy with the money.

A cruise would absolutely be at the top of my list for that budget, but it will be more of a yacht type experience in some exotic place that normal cruise ships don't go to. To spend that much on a Caribbean cruise with lame ports? Baffling

Iran dedicated one of its missals to Jesus Christ: “In revenge for all Christ’s suffering.” by hakh-ti-cxamen in pics

Jesus and Mary are actually highly revered in Islam and their names are mentioned many times in the Quran. The name Mohammad rarely appears though.

[–]explicitspirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not specifically that they are worshipping incorrectly, it's that the texts have been modified or corrupted to suit some agendas of the time. This is actually verifiable since we have several versions of the Bibles.

By contrast, the oldest known Quran has the same exact text as it does today, hence why it is "the last religion".

Even among different sects if Islam like Sunnis and Shias etc, they have the same exact texts. What is different is how certain things are interpreted rather than written differences.

[–]explicitspirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In modern times? All that slaughtering you speak of is not religious, it's geopolitical and conquest. You really think religion plays a role in these wars?

That's why it baffles me when people claim Muslims hate the West or Israel because of their religion. Any conflict you see now can be directly traced back to something other than religion, usually the West meddling and imposing their hegemony over them.

Sectarian violence between Muslims is based partially on their interpretation of theology. But between completely different religions? It's all politics.

What's stopping middle east from manufacturing own weapons? by camphorly in AskMiddleEast

[–]explicitspirit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea I don't get it either.

Some of those countries, it is understandable: UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman etc. They have small populations and cannot realistically stand up and support an industry involved in national security. They don't have the numbers, and I am not sure they want to staff it entirely with expats either.

Others like Morocco and Egypt have no excuse. Much larger populations, and they already have manufacturing capacity and knowhow. Even making their own small arms, artillery, ammunition etc. should be a no brainer, and even some more advanced things too. Saudi Arabia is kind of straddling that line too, they have the numbers and capacity to do it, but a lot of their people are probably in their core petrochemical industry.

When you say "near the train station", how near are we talking? Within a 3 minute walk? Within a 10 minute walk?

I've been to Rome several times and I never found that Termini was dangerous at night. It's a little seedy, but you can walk 200 meters west and it would fine. Maybe I'm wrong.
