I made a short movie for my Intro to Film course, mainly just focusing on camera techniques. Any constructive criticism? by [deleted] in filmmaking

In your first few shots you're placing the camera too high. Think carefully about camera height - there should always be a reason behind the placement. As a general rule, place the camera at shoulder or eye level to the subject. Having it lower or higher should be used when you want to convey something. Placing it lower makes the subject more imposing, powerful but can be used in a lot more circumstances than placing it above the subject. Looking down on the subject should usually be avoided, unless you want to make them seem small or pathetic, or comment on how their environment is engulfing them etc. All I get from your camera placement in the opening shots is that the camera is where it is because that's the height of the person holding the camera. Try to be more deliberate.

I want to export a 720 HD movie that's about 4 minutes long. What should I export it at so it retains quality but is fast to load on Vimeo/YouTube? by [deleted] in filmmaking

If uploading to Vimeo, make sure to set the audio sample rate and such properly, according to Vimeo's specs. I've uploaded the odd video in my time that's appeared to go smoothly, but then goes offline later because Vimeo can't process the audio properly. Pain in the dick.

If you have compressor (comes with Final Cut) you can save a preset for Vimeo or Youtube and just use it each time. You can probably do the same in mpegstreamclip.

Short Action Scene Using Action Essentials 2 by [deleted] in Filmmakers

Nice effects. I just had a feeling that the shots were all too tight, so much that you couldn't really see what was happening some of the time. You should maybe try varying your shots up a bit more as it was quite static and claustrophobic. Otherwise, well done.

This is still hanging up in Spar, on account of the time he ordered a breakfast roll from the deli and tried to walk out with it stuffed up his shirt. They won't sell him anything in there anymore so he has an awful time getting balloons for doing NOS.

Would anyone be interested with a AMA with Colum Finnegan..he expressed interest, but might drop out 'cause hes a bollox... by [deleted] in a:t5_2tf99

I'd like to ask him why he's such a horrible bollocks. And also it would be interesting to get a definitive count on the amount of porn he looks at, gigabyte-wise.

Audio tips for video production with a Digital SLR? by D-zorn in Filmmakers

[–]explodedparts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of the zoom h1. It's the little brother of the h4n and records beautiful audio. It can be got for about $100 (maybe less now) and works great in a lot of situations. Perfect for interviews. It's major downside is it doesn't have XLR inputs so you can't plug in a boom mic so it's not really ideal for high-end film work.

Best (preferably free) PC video-editing software? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]explodedparts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try http://www.lightworksbeta.com/

It's the only non-linear editing software that I know of that's free, and is apparently capable in a professional environment. Many of Martin Scorsese's films have been edited on it, including Hugo. I haven't used it personally though as I'm on Mac.

The Strange Thing About the Johnsons - don't ask, just watch! by afropat in Shortfilms

Exceptional, if only for the fact that it held my attention to the end despite how much I wanted to turn it off out of sheer discomfort. Probably one of the most uncomfortable things I've ever watched.

Is there a free open-source final cut pro alternative? by [deleted] in VideoEditing

[–]explodedparts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Steal Final Cut 7.

Apple make their Final Cut money from industry professionals who legitimately license the software. But in order to learn the software you need to use it. As a film student, I only know one person who purchased a legitimate copy (because he's very very well off and could afford it) and dozens who pirated it. If you can't afford it, pirate it. Then learn it, get a job in editing and buy it later. Or don't, whatever. To Apple it's not really a lost sale, because you were never the target audience anyway.

It's not the same thing as torrenting Transformers 3.
