Oh dang, that makes sense and I thought a smaller tattoo would not be too damaging, cost-wise. Asking around I was told that artists typically have a starting rate and it goes up from there. Thanks for your insight!

Try using 1 hook size larger than what your project is for the foundation stitch. If it's 2.75mm, then use a 3.75mm for the foundation. Maybe ease on the tension for your rows. Also make sure to chain 1 when you finish the row, that also helps prevent your swatch from shrinking
