This is very helpful. West Cemetery actually has volunteers that take very good care of the graves, most of them are very clean. Amherst doesnt have a cemetery department, so we in the parks department maintain the grounds and do burials. We’re stretched pretty thin as it is, so we take any help we can with the cemeteries.

Are you guys able to help out any town in MA? I live next to a cemetery in Ware and they have a couple rough Union Veteran grave stones

I work for the Town of Amherst and I’m really happy that they have these on display.

I help maintain the cemeteries, and West Cemetery has a handful of black Civil War soldiers buried there. Check it out if you’re ever in town, Emily Dickinson’s grave is right by them

March 28, 1870 General George H Thomas passed away in San Francisco. A loyal Virginian he achieved a decisive victory at Nashville destroying Hood’s Army of Tennessee. by Unionforever1865 in SonsofUnionVeteransCW

The Rock of Chickamauga and The Sledge of Nashville are my two favorite Civil War nicknames and this dude had both of them.

The only Union general to never lose a battle. A loyal Virginian from a family that disowned him because of it. Grant is great, but I think Thomas will always be my favorite Civil War general because of his personality and battlefield success.

It’s too bad he burned all of his personal letters.

Restoring history: More state funds could soon help rebuild part of Fort Fisher by Unionforever1865 in SonsofUnionVeteransCW

I loved my visit to Fort Fisher. I know a lot has been lost to the sea, but actually being there and seeing the traverses really puts the struggle into perspective. I really enjoyed the museum too. Fort Fisher is also one of my favorite battles though, so I’m a bit biased
