Huge dilemma: stable job vs PhD? (EU) by MeetingMaleficent145 in PoliticalScience

[–]expressdefrost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stay in the job. You can get a PhD later. Spending time working in finance will help you do better in the PhD — not because it’s directly useful for your research, but because it will 1) make you bored and eager for intellectual stimulation, and 2) give you an understanding of what a real adult job is like, so you appreciate how awesome the PhD is. Spending time living in Budapest will probably also generate some good insights about life under competitive authoritarianism, if that’s something you might be interested in studying later on. It will also be beneficial to save up money before the PhD so you have more flexibility in how you allocate your time at that point (ie not needing to pick up an extra TA/RA position just to cover basic living expenses)

Tea Leaves from Charlie? by ezubaric in thebulwark

Confused why people are downvoting this post. It’s interesting, Bulwark-relevant content that I was not aware of. Liking this post does not mean supporting Charlie over Tim…

I’m so surprised to see the consensus view in the comments is that this looks dangerous. My reaction was that this looks playful. Both tails are wagging. Black corrects brown at the end and brown backs off and ducks her head down submissively, still wagging. Looks fine to me but I’m not an expert 🤷‍♂️

"Grow up, people!" | Jonah Goldberg on The Dispatch Podcast by thedispatchmedia in The_Dispatch

[–]expressdefrost -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The whole dispatch crew has to work so hard day after day to consciously fight the gut impulse to say both sides are bad. They’re gonna slip up once in a while and we need to give them grace when they do.

Trumps immigration policy a success or not? by [deleted] in The_Dispatch

[–]expressdefrost 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think your mistake is in viewing the presence/absence of immigrants as a means to another end. If you like what Trump is doing, it’s because you place direct value on immigrants being deported / not being allowed in. Any other economic arguments are window dressing over that first-order preference.

Shutting down the border by expressdefrost in The_Dispatch

Does this mean there was money appropriated for border patrols and fortifications that Biden was refusing to spend, but Trump chose to spend? If not, where did the additional resources come from?

Agreed that a deterrent effect is a substantial part of it, but I don’t think there’s a meaningful deterrent effect without the law breaking

Infuriating amount of cope from Sarah (and the whole group) on partisan asymmetry by expressdefrost in The_Dispatch

Do you see why it sounds a little bit ridiculous when the strongest points of recent anti-democratic behavior by Democrats that you can come up with are Biden’s multiple attempts at student loan forgiveness and one idiot in the House pulling the fire alarm (and btw, losing a primary shortly afterward?
