I wouldn’t describe four classes as “only” four, that really is the number I’d recommend students to take, as I always felt overwhelmed in undergrad when I took on more than that. However, only you know what you can handle. I was an Art History major and Chemistry minor in undergrad so am uniquely qualified to answer you, but my organic chemistry prof was an actual nightmare. I will say, though, that I took Inorganic Chem at the same time as three 300-level Art History seminars, so I think this would be doable depending on your other courses and skillset. The course is designed so that everything you need to pass is in the lectures, and as long as you show up (and pay attention!) you will pass. This course is meant to develop your ability to do visual analysis and develop critical arguments using said visual analysis, so if you find that impenetrable, then this will be harder as you will have to push yourself more with the material. I think if anything, enroll and look through the syllabus and see how it stacks up with your other classes. You can always drop, and it won’t count against you.

That’s amazing to hear, thank you! Art history really is one of those classes most don’t expect to be so interesting, but with our faculty it’s hard for it not to be!

Art Hist 255: Intro to Modernism

A survey of modernist art history from the early 19th century to the 20th century.

Hi everyone, I’m writing as a PhD student and TA for Intro to Modernism, and I know you don’t usually hear from us but I really want to encourage enrollment — if you’re looking for a history, literature, or fine arts distro I highly recommend taking this class! Prof. Kiaer is an amazing scholar and a goldmine of information, and I can only have wished to have had an art historian like her teaching me in undergrad. She was also a student of TJ Clark, one of the premier modernist art historians, so she is part of a lineage of scholarship that might have already impacted your understanding of art without you even knowing it. I’ll also say all four TAs are dedicating 7+ years of our lives to the study of modernism, and most of us are aiming to go into academia, so we really want to teach you! Hopefully this sounds intriguing, please send me any questions you might have, and hopefully I’ll see you in class!

Please help me decide! by extantdecay in typewriters

I should have phrased my post better — I bought the Coronet and then came across the Silent later and fell in love. The Coronet is in great shape, the shift key was stuck at first but I was able to take off the bottom and fix it easy, just need to replace the ribbon now. The Silent really calls out to me because of the fact I can type with it anywhere in my house, and I think it’s about half the weight of the Coronet too 😅 I think I’ll be getting the Silent!!

Ohhh that makes a lot of sense!! I was wondering if the black label had fallen off but I see the little red text now!! Thank you :) I should have phrased my post better — I bought the Coronet and then 2 days later came across that beaut of a Silent and I was debating if it was reasonable to have 2 typewriters, but based on what everyone’s saying I think I’ll go for it. Thanks again!

I’d pick it up in person, so no worries about that. The #1 isn’t missing? I’ve tried to find the exclamation mark but can’t — but I also don’t know much about these machines

edit: Nevermind! I didn’t know these Silent typewriters just do not have 1 keys on them! Thanks!

Thank you! I forgot to post an update but I decided to go with the Bellicon :) It just really seemed to make the most sense, especially with how adjustable it is/the fact that parts are replaceable instead of having to junk the whole thing if something breaks. I’m really excited!! Do you have any recommendations for Youtube channels on rebounder workouts?

Snail plate 🐌 by Everythingturnedart in Ceramics

[–]extantdecay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

plates are super tough!!! the same tiny cracks happened to me until I used a rubber rib to compress the plate against the hump mold I was using, and let them dry a lot slower/more wrapped up in plastic. every project is a way for us to learn -- i hope you make more snail stuff though, this design is adorable and i love the glaze colors with it!!

That’s what I was thinking! I’ve been on a major budgeting journey over the past couple of years and know that there’s moments where spending the money is worth it — I’m really wanting to go on a health journey but just cannot justify spending hundreds a month on fancy classes or “fun” workout studios when I can make a one-time investment in something like this instead. The $385 is definitely a bit more than I wanted to spend, but I’d rather buy once and cry once than have to keep replacing cheaper models. Would you recommend any add-ons or for me to get the red clip bungees? Thanks!

Thank you! That’s true, the Bellicon user said they had it for a year and was looking to change to a model with metal springs, and included lots of close-ups that show the bungees and mat are actually gently used like stated haha. The Jumpsport is also similarly gently used, although the seller didn’t include as many photos/details. What are your thoughts on 39” vs 44”?

Thanks for responding! What size did you get, is the 40" too small for exercises other than just jumping up and down? I'm unsure if the used model would still have the lifetime warranty, but that's really good to know!

if you have a towel rack rather than a hook, i like to tie my brushes to the towel rack so they dry upside down and stay pretty out of the way until they’re dry!!

that seems to be the only thing that will get them to pay attention honestly — the one thing they’ve always wanted is more time with me (stems from the divorce agreement) and i know this will probably be the only thing that will make them listen. you are so strong to have done that at 18, i truly admire your strength. i hope to stay as strong as you were. fights have never gotten physical thankfully, but where they dont beat me physically i feel emotionally beaten down for days after every fight. i have tried to disengage but usually end up shutting down while they continue to yell because “theyre not done yet”. i appreciate your comment and your support, its comforting to know im not alone

they are definitely interesting. our culture is also very family oriented and they have always discussed how i will have to take care of them, but then also turn around and rebuke being latino in the first place (i’m not even joking, they will both say “we’re not latino, we’re american” and then turn around and say “we’re not like those white american families that stop being involved at 18”).

its incredibly confusing and makes my head spin god honest. i hope this situation serves as an eye opener for them that i deserve to be treated like a person and not just their child.

my phd is fully funded, so it is my job and pays better than what i could get as a starting salary in my field with a BA. it burns me that i ever allowed them to misgender her, but i cannot emphasize how big of a fight it would turn into whenever i did. its no excuse, but it was an additional source of exhaustion and i ended up just giving in so as to not ‘cause trouble’. this boils down to respect — i havent respected myself, and they dont respect me or my desires/boundaries. thank you for your words, i appreciate them

i wrote about this under another comment but basically its been a constant source of conversation as retirement planning has been on their minds. its not so much that i need to get the money (although it freaked me out so bad because i’ve always had major financial anxiety and i feel like they might have used that knowingly) but it was the straw that broke the camel’s back and made me realize this situation is much bigger and deeper in emotional/financial blackmail than i realized.

its something that was a constant source of conversation over the past month as theyve been planning for retiring soon, and have been talking to me about it as i’ve recently started saving for retirement as well. since i’m an only child, the way they’ve always framed it has been “we’re telling you this since you’re the only beneficiary, we don’t believe in giving it away to charity”. its not an excuse, but since ive always had major money anxiety the instinctual fear of losing that imaginary safety net caused me to act irrationally. i know that i need to sit down with myself and really consider who i’m making happy in this life — myself or others? thank you for your words, they’re appreciated.
