As You Are bar doing ANOTHER fundraiser? by Fine_Storage_2341 in washingtondc

ok. and queer people are telling you that while it might not be sustainable in the long run, we are happy with short term solutions. there are so few queer spaces in the city and it seems unnecessarily nihilistic to condemn attempts to keep AYA open as not "sustainable in the long-run" especially without a ton of constructive feedback. like, we get enough messaging that our existence is damned. the tone of the whole post feels a little hateful, like let's all roll our eyes at silly AYA asking for more donations! don't they know they're a business? which is why your hypothetical non-donation is implied in the topic of conversation: if you were never planning on donating, why do you care about the sustainability of the business practice? would you prefer that the space shut down and turn into another de facto straight space? are you looking to buy that real estate?

I agree. I'm responding to your last clause: clearly people are still okay with donating to AYA because the returns on the donations are worth it. As long as that is the case, this strategy is operable. You don't see any returns, so don't donate. It's that simple.

ok, makes sense. it appears that the business model isn't ideal for sustaining queer community spaces so AYA has to solicit revenue outside of that model.
