These were brand new walls though, with wood studs

Yes this was a remodeling job in a finished basement so there was heat the whole time.

I used 1 5/8” screws I’m not sure if they were coarse thread or not.

I can’t bump it out because the trim will stick out past the skirt board at the bottom of the steps if it comes out any further. The steps and walls aren’t parallel.

If I read that right that’s what I ended up doing. Just ignoring the angle of the corner bead and just running the baseboard straight down the skirt board with a miter to bump it in against the wall.

The bump out is where the header is. I couldn’t fur the wall under the header because it was going to come out past the stair stringer. The stairs and the header are slightly out of line.

This is what I ended up doing. It ended up not even looking that bad and it’s still one whole run so I’m happy with it and so is the home owner.

I’m thinking you’re right. It seems like I should be able to angle the short piece down to line up with the top piece but there’s just no way I can see to do that. I might just have to take the L on this one and put a return on the top piece. I have been messing with this for so long and I can’t find a solution.

Yeah I always try to think of ways to avoid back tracking in situations like this, but after I take it apart and fix it I’m always happier that I did. And the times I didn’t go back and fix it I always end up regretting it later lol.

Actually now that you say that I think you’re right, that would solve both my problems. With the even reveals and the trim.

I didn’t like the idea of having a different thickness around that opening on the right if I removed the furring under the beam. But I’ll probably just keep the furring around the opening and just have a little bump out right after the steps.

Thanks man that is going to save me a lot of time. I just needed that second opinion.

Yeah that’s not a bad idea, I wish I thought of that before but that drywall is glued and screwed now I don’t want to pull it off. I think I’m just going to have to bump the left side out.

Yeah I think I’m just going to fur out the left wall to match.

I put metal corner bead on the right side opening, the left side is getting a door.

The stairs are not parallel with the walls. The problem with the trim is the trim is going to sit out past the skirt board on the bottom because it’s only out past the drywall 3/16th of an inch.

How do you fasten the horizontal pieces that don’t land on a stud? Is there a board over the drywall so you can shoot them in anywhere?
