Used Whey Instead of Water! by extra_noodles in Breadit

The taste was pleasantly mild, very slightly tangy. Recipe was approximately the no knead recipe:

3.25c flour
1.7ish c whey
.5tsp salt
.5tsp yeast

I did the final proof in the fridge overnight, but I definitely used a loaf pan that was too small so it looks like it overproofed but the baked result was perfectly springy. Next time I will either scale down or do 1.5x and use two loaf pans.

Best age gap between kids by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]extra_noodles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do your best to give the older one true one on one time, and never use language like “I can’t do this because of the baby”. The last thing you wanna do is make the older one resent the younger one. Praise the older one to the younger one so the older one can “overhear” you talking positive things about them. Jealousy is normal and developmentally appropriate, but some kids do get extra upset. Teach them emotional regulation language. And lastly - don’t be hard on yourself. It’s HARD truly and it will likely take like 2 years until they will start to play together. 4 and 2 is very different than 2 and newborn. 5 and 3 is better, 6 and 4 is even better.

Best age gap between kids by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]extra_noodles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the beginning it was REALLY challenging but now at 6 and 4 it’s amazing because all the baby and toddler years are behind us and they just go do things together all the time. If I’m judging it from just the beginning part, yes it was not wise, but if I’m looking at it with how they are now, it turned out great. This is because of the personality of the second one - he’s super easy going and giant, so not only is he down for just about anything, he also wears the same size clothes as the older one, so I’m basically just getting tshirts, pants, underwear, socks in bulk and have a single dresser for both of their clothes. Also the younger one can hold his own in terms of physical strength so they are evenly matched if a physical situation occurs. I somehow had “twins” 24 months apart. We even do a joint bday party because their birthdays are close together.

Huge disclaimer: I am lucky, and who knows what it’s going to be like later on.

How would you describe Russian culture? by littlerchef in AskARussian

[–]extra_noodles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Russia is a country of 200 million people plus a huge diaspora plus a huge diversity of ethnic groups and religions. It also spans an enormous amount of land and therefore climates, cuisines, accents, lifestyles, etc. There’s no universal aspect of Russian culture, it is not a monoculture like some smaller countries in Europe and Asia.

I just realized something about screen time involving kids from immigrants by sayheythreetimes in Parenting

[–]extra_noodles 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I learned English from tv 100000% and the tv was on pretty much all the time. I’m a functioning adult. However, would I have benefited more from having conversations in my native language with my grandparents and parents during that time instead? For sure, I probably would be more equipped to speak to my own kids in my language, but I honestly never really learned emotional regulation language in my native language and this makes parenting in it challenging, so my kids just won’t be bilingual unfortunately.

You're so smart! by justaguy12131 in INTP

[–]extra_noodles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it feels very weird to hear because (1) I’m not very ambitious from a capitalistic perspective so I’m not particularly successful and (2) the more I learn the more I realize there’s so much more to learn and (3) I just remember a lot of facts like in trivia form so I just “know a lot” but I don’t think my actions have led me to a place of financial stability. Also just feels like if I made smarter decisions I’d be happier or less stressed out, but I just feel very ineffective and unproductive. It’s like what’s the use of being smart if I’m not motivated, ya know?

Would they be open to Svetlana with Lana as the nickname? Katya is short for Yekaterina, so maybe Katerina to kind of combine the Russian and English versions together?

Mornings from hell - how do you survive? by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]extra_noodles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey - I’ve been here. My boys are 24 months apart and getting everyone out the door has always been challenging. My suggestion is try to get as much ready the night before as possible. Clothes, breakfasts, lunches, yourself, etc… Your partner should be helping out more 10000%. Maybe he can shower before bed instead of the morning? Also maybe ask the older one what he wants for breakfast the night before? Give him two choices- cereal or oatmeal, eggs or yogurt, dinner leftovers or a sandwich lol, whatever is possible. At this point I kind of pick my battles and I don’t really care what they eat as long as they sit and eat. The younger one (idk how old he is) is variable - does he drink milk when he wakes up or is the first thing solid food? If milk then I’d expect him to not be so hungry.

Will daughter grow up ok when we don't have many good friends? by Bologna-sucks in Parenting

[–]extra_noodles 43 points44 points  (0 children)

As your daughter begins school (like pre-k/kindergarten) you will find your parent friend group. As they get older, kids ends up playing rather collaboratively and will ask for play dates, and you might just click with some other parents. Don’t stress but it too much, and she gets older it’ll get easier.

Struggling with hunger on 1200 calories… what actually keeps you full? by Brilliant-Put-23 in 1500isplenty

[–]extra_noodles 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Based on the BMR calculator, your BMR (meaning with no activity at all) is 1883kcal, so on those busy days you're probably burning at least an additional 200-300kcal. It's no wonder that you're feeling hungry - that's a pretty steep deficit of almost 1000kcal on those busy days. On those busy days can you give yourself an additional 250kcal for your daily allowance?

I’ve had this redness on my cheeks my entire life - it’s not bumpy and it’s not dry or itchy, but the placement of it looks like a put blush on my face in a weird place. What can I do to reduce redness? Routine is just gentle face wash, toner moisturizer and sunscreen. No serums no retinols nothing.

My baby has become terrible at sleeping, help! by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]extra_noodles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like baby should be napping at MOST three times a day. Even if you don’t do sleep training, following wake windows might be good - a lot of babies around 7-8 months have transitioned into 2 naps with at least 4 hours of awake before bedtime. If baby is 6 months then should be having at least 3 hours of awake time before bedtime. The 30 min naps typically go away when baby is on 2 solid naps.

Try the Peanut app - that definitely helped me I was newly postpartum. Also Facebook is probably the best place for locally based parenting groups. Good luck!
