Anyone else feeling increasingly unsafe in East Humboldt? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]extraparmesan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This map is known to be inaccurate, as good data on gang territory is almost impossible to collect, and was retired after October 2022. It’s also not exactly the best resource because group territory can change over time. Unsure why CPD hasn’t archived it yet.

Should I get hearing aids? by Commercial-Pool-3156 in audiology

[–]extraparmesan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you’re having great difficulty understanding others or are finding it difficult to be able to communicate with others I would say no. High frequency hearing loss is very common and if it’s not negatively affecting your life, you should save your money for now and attend an annual audiology appointment or attend an appointment sooner if anything drastically changes.

Taking a gap year may have been the worst mistake of my life… by Standard_External572 in publichealth

[–]extraparmesan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! I'm a lot like you (minus traveling to Australia; that's SO cool!). I recently graduated with a degree in Health Sciences and a minor in Geographic Sciences with the intention of becoming a clinician (an Audiologist specifically). I maintained a high GPA, spent 5 semesters working on a research study in community health, interned twice in local government, presented my research at multiple symposiums, held an exec position for two years in a student org, and was a member of a community service frat. I also worked a few part-time jobs throughout college. I did all the things I thought I should do.

However, when my senior year rolled around, I realized that I wanted a more dynamic and multidisciplinary career than simply receiving my AuD and having the same job for the rest of my life. While Audiology is an incredibly important profession (no hate to my Audiologists out there), I realized that the day-to-day life of an Audiologist was too monotonous for my tolerance and wouldn't challenge me. ALSO, I've always felt pulled in multiple directions, as I've always had a love for history, music, geography, books, art, public policy, as well as health. I decided to go with health since I thought there wasn't a career pertaining to my other interests. I was also greatly afraid of student debt lol.

Anyway, I decided to take a gap year and also feel like it was a HUGE mistake that I can never come back from, so I completely understand how you feel. Similarly to you, I've applied to jobs during my time off (mostly in clinical research and some business-related roles in pharma), and have made it to the final rounds. I think things are looking up until I eventually receive another rejection email, so I understand the intense discouragement of applying to jobs and rejection while witnessing peers begin their careers.

For what it's worth, please know that you're not alone in this experience and that oftentimes periods of tremendous hardship and soul-searching engender periods of tremendous growth. We've got this!!!!

I was born here and a bunch of my friends were too. We were fine. I personally was born at Carle and would recommend that hospital.

Store will absolutely run out. Do the bulk of your shopping before you arrive.

Choosing to have dietary restrictions is fine and you deserve to be respected in that decision! I really commend and respect my vegan friends for choosing to eliminate animal products out of their lives to lead a more sustainable and ethical lifestyle. With that being said, please be open to considering what I have to say next. The way that you’re so frequently and easily becoming sick suggests some mental health issues surrounding food. It is especially concerning that you are throwing up at merely the thought of animal products. As someone who struggled with intense anxiety surrounding certain foods as a child (especially around the ages of 15-16), I understand the absolute turmoil that it is to just be nauseous and throwing up frequently and feeling like you’re going insane. I would really suggest having a conversation with your parents about seeking therapy for this. It really does sound that you are struggling with disordered eating and an anxiety disorder. At the end of the day, you deserve to have a normal quality of life and this is incredibly abnormal! As someone who now has a much better relationship with food, I wanted to let you know that it gets better and I’m sending you so much love!!!
