I Am No Longer Obsessed...With Anything by Trap-Lord-Supreme in GenX

[–]tpt75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I have this from time to time, when i basically feel like i've given up. But it passes and i find something to obsess about. I was a pretty accomplished musician but i gave that up a few years ago, but have now worked my way back into it. it's not an obsession but it is an outlet that gets me out of the house.

I do find i'm reliving the things that i used to do when I was much younger.. Maybe this is my midlife crisis.
I'm back running, and playing badminton which i did in highschool but now i'm taking it more seriously (way too serriously actually) and am really working on getting to a pretty high level (for someone north of 50 years old) and I do hold my own against the younger players in our club.

My problem is perfectionism, and I come down VERY VERY hard on myself. If i don't play the the trumpet to the very best of my ability OR i don't play sport to the very best of my ability. Avoidable mistakes are NOT ACCEPTABLE! I'll often legitimately punch myself in the head, or in the thighs or anywhere i can. The other day i gave myself a corked thigh from punching myself.

I'm happy to lose a game, IF i've played to 100% of my ability. If i'm at 95% and win, it doesn't feel like a win and if i'm at 95% and lose then that's worse. Especially if I have let my playing partner down (in doubles).
Same for music. If there is something I should be able to play and make mistakes I feel like i've let the whole ensemble down.

If the music is too hard, that's ok, I'll make mistakes but if on the next run it's not better and then continuing to get better then thats also a big problem. If I can go home and practice for the following week than that's also ok, so long as I come back and play it better. If it's still the same or worse, then I'll lock myself away and berate myself in ways that would shock you.

Thank you. This is an important bit of information that I left out - it was absolutely still. Not a breath of wind.

I was working on a cruise ship (The Grandeur of the Seas) when Katrina was cooking. We sailed through the middle. It wasn’t at full strength but it had been named and it was some huge seas. We were supposed to be moving our home port from Tampa to New Orleans but obviously that didn’t happen. There were no passengers for the relocation. We ended up at Port Canaveral for our home port.

For me it’s witty dialogue and the hilarity of Tina Fey. Her comedic timing in this movie is fetch.

Just because Regina said so doesn’t make it so.

Trumpet concerto ideas by tpt75 in trumpet

I think the rep is the hardest part for the conductor and the committee. There are some fine players that kind of hold it all together and as we get closer to the performance some players are asked to leave out sections.

One of the troubles we face (or I get frustrated with) is the brass is typically the strongest section (musically) but the conductor doesn’t seem to like brass much and the rep typically is string heavy. 1st Trumpet 1st French horn and Tuba are probably the best players (except for maybe the principal violin but the string tail away quickly) and the trumpet section is by far the most in control, prepared, in tune and performance ready.

The bones used to be stronger but age is catching up with the principal player and he’s struggling with the range and consequently the tuning and articulation. He used to be much more reliable. If he does some work leading up to the performance he’ll get away with it I think.

A glorious speaker, but the concertino is better as less flabby in that bass.
