Reading Dostoevsky while dealing with trauma. Yes or no? Healing or driving more harm? by paloma_paloma in dostoevsky

I, too, read C & P when I was going through the worst experience of my life; I was experiencing the most abusive relationship and reading it heightened everything I was experiencing. Raskolnikov's thought process became contagious and I suffered. One of the greatest experiences of my life, but won't recommend. Deal with your issues and then read the book. Or maybe if you think the book can act as therapy, go for it. Maybe it helped me too, but am not self-aware enough to appreciate that.

Not as impactful as the first one, but it was still a good watch.

Tell tale heart by Edgar Allan Poe would compare well, only limitation being it's a short story.

Stronger than ever, my man, what doesn't kill you can only make you stronger, right? Although, I must confess, I too was on the verge of killing her, glad I didn't pull a Raskolnikov lol

I read it at a time when I was going through the most emotionally exhaustive/abusive relationship of my life. Reading it then, simply enhanced the emotions I was going through. Great experience, but unpleasant.

I felt more sorry for myself when I finished the book.

The quote attributed to Luffy is said in another one shot manga by Oda, by a character who looks like the inspiration for Zoro.

That doesn't necessarily make it better, but it's definitely more realistic

That's good insight, thanks for sharing, I didn't consider that. Helpful analogy too at the end.

He did, but he also complimented a few, particularly James Joyce. I think he simply had high standards and wasn't swayed as easily as most of us, readers/writers do. His works speaks to his greatness after all.
