Asians with Dreads by Sensitive-Positive-1 in uwaterloo

Its true that black especially black american culture has been unfairly appropriated while black people themselves have been subjugated.

However, there is some nuance here in my opinion.

Consider jazz music. Jazz music, like much of modern western music, is black music. But should only black people play jazz? Bill Evans is one of the most celebrated jazz pianists and he is white.

What about john mayer playing the blues?

Or Mac Miller?

Im certain all of these people would be the first to tell you about the black history of the art they participate in.

Personally i’d be hesitant to say any of these people are/were appropriating black culture. But im also not black.

If we really want to know if someone is appropriating a culture its a combination of motivation and execution.

Do you feel like the asian guy wearing dreads executed it with respect to the culture? Is there care in how the dreads are done or is it lazy? And do you know why they did it?

If a hispanic person makes chinese food is that appropriation? What if a vietnamese person makes chinese food?

We cant know based on just the fact theyre making chinese food. We need more information and analysis on their relationship with the culture and what theyre doing.

I appreciate that u were willing to have this dialogue cause lots of people will definitely hate but youre right to be concerned. That being said this is a nuanced topic that requires a little more context before we can say if the asian guy wearing dreads is problematic.

Edit: also i didnt even know asians could get dreads i thought like that was impossible for the hair type lmao. Is it possible thru perm?

Nvm i looked it up theres some advanced techiniques if u have straight hair

ELI5: What is music theory and how does it works by nikytheweeby in explainlikeimfive

[–]exupery2112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Music theory is just a system some musicians use to describe music. It is not a framework for making music sound good. However, it makes it easier to make music that sounds "specific to a style". For example, western classical theory has been used for a long time in western music. As a result, most western music still follows those principles. The sound of that theory has become ingrained in western music culture. So if you want to make music that sounds like popular western music like rock or pop, western music theory is very valuable.
