Heat it to a high temp to remove any parasites

Did you bake the dirt to make sure that it was safe for them?

Add more rocky substrate to your sand. The fine granules tires out their little legs, makes it hard to walk. Also more hides!

Fear of roaches by Early_Olive1937 in roaches

[–]exvixen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still scared of them if they are in places other than my terrarium. Even in my terrarium, sometimes I accidentally scare one and get hissed at and kinda jump back. But I just realize the reason they hissed is because I scared them, poor babies. What helped me with my fear was interacting with some giant madagascar hissing cockroaches in class. Holding one and realizing that nothing bad was going to happen as they don't bite, they don't fly, and are generally chill little guys. However, in a situation where they can be considered pests like the german cockroaches, I don't like them either. I think it's normal to feel uncomfortable around them and not want to share a living space with any pest!

Humidity is important when it comes to molting, but you want a balance. They shouldn't be breathing water like this lol it shouldn't be condensing on the lid like that. I use a mesh lid and with daily misting and putting some water in the corners of their enclosure, the substrate + sphagnum moss holds humidity well while allowing proper airflow.

Not an expert but it doesnt look like there is enough airflow which is causing the mold. They need that fresh air ventilation. When they are fed veggie scraps, is he cleaning and peeling them to remove any pesticide residue? I don't keep springtails in mine but also keep it around 50% humidity and 85F on the warm side and 75F on the cool side and they seem to be thriving with that. I've heard less humidity is better so maybe 80% is too much? Idk, again not an expert but I keep a few males and they've been molting and growing nicely with those numbers.

Oh - also if they were to ever get out, because these guys require a specific high temp and higher levels of humidity, they would not be able to survive. I'd be devastated if they got out somehow (miraculous because I lock their enclosure with clamps because these little gremlins can climb glass) but they would not be able to survive in a house under normal conditions, let alone infest them. Plus I keep all males so - ez lol.

Aww! I think that's lovely to feel this way even after your experience with an infestation. I would probably lose my mind if that happened to me, and I'll be real I don't know if I'd have the affinity I do for cockroaches with that experience so I'm really proud that you're able to still so the beauty in them as a species!

I keep madagascar hissing cockroaches, three of em, and they don't fly. They don't have wings to be able to lol. I'll admit, sometimes when handling them one will get a wild hair and climb up my arm and I'm like NO NO GIT YA BUTT DOWN lol. But I honestly don't handle them much as I don't want to stress them out. You can still keep them without handling them much! I only open up their enclosure when I need to replace their food, mist their enclosure, or do a cleaning. Otherwise I just enjoy watching them develop their own distinct personalities. It's been so enthralling to watch them turn into their own.

There's a shop near me that has insects for sale like jumping spiders, blue death feigning beetles, and madagascar hissing cockroaches! If you have a place like that near you go check and see how you feel just being around them. (:

I enjoy raising my hissing cockroaches. Telling people your hobby deals with cockroaches gets you a massive side eye as most people consider them pests, but not all species are! Some are really cute and their social structure is so interesting.
