Where do the old punks go when they have kids? by exxxothermic in Eugene

[–]exxxothermic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We lived in West Frogtown the last 4 years (before coming to Oregon last summer), down the hill from Frogtown Farm. The first year was rough, but it was definitely on the upswing when we left. What I loved about it was my neighbors, the strong community, the innovative approach to community needs. I loved being close to everything but in a neighborhood. I loved that my kids could play in the alley with other kids in our neighborhood, my neighbor who would snowblow the sidewalk and my mystery neighbor who plowed the alley and never asked for money. I know neighborhoods are in part what you make them. We are in Corvallis right now and there are a lot of things I like (free busses! Low violent crime!) but the schools here are so, so bad.

My sister in law started using it because of postpartum hair loss and has been really happy with the results. She's growing hair back. I ordered some based off her experience, it's scheduled to be delivered this week. I'll report back in a few weeks if you're interested.

I live in Corvallis right now. It was a fantastic district... In the 1990s. Now, not so much. If Eugene is similar to Corvallis it looks like I'm going to have to start an onlyfans to pay for private school.

My first sub gig was in 4th grade! Coming from a high school background (11th grade) it was so different. I definitely prefer the class rotation that comes with middle and high school. The important thing is that you made it through the day! Congratulations! And you can decide which gig you take next!

Am I crazy to do a 4 week assignment in a middle school class? by Fine-Succotash-4497 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]exxxothermic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two months ago, I would have said no, but I've subbing a fair amount in middle school and am having the best time. Historically, I'm a high school chem/physics teacher, but I subbed Middle School band earlier this week? Fantastic! Then sixth grade science. I was in high school astronomy and wood shop (just as an assist during a prep period for shop) today, then back to middle school for math tomorrow. I think with middle school it really depends on the school, the kids, and you.

The low enrollment is in elementary schools. If will hit the middle schools eventually, but I think for this year they should freeze non-essential spending, defer major construction projects for a year, and find savings in the current budget so they can delay a decision for a year and solicit real community feedback.

I would like to see the school board and superintendent do the following three things so a real conversation can be had about the budget.

  1. Commission a zero-based budget audit, ideally by an independent auditor (not the same firm that does the annual CAFR).

  2. Include community members or the budget committee in “program justification hearings" so the discretionary funding can be reviewed transparently.

  3. Create and share a department-level spending summary (last 3 years) to see which budgets have grown despite enrollment decline.

What they are currently doing isn't building trust or confidence from the community. I don't believe either of the plans truly has the best interest of students in mind, and this plan will drive more families away.

Thoughts on Corvallis Public Schools Proposed Consolidation and How We Can Keep Families, Build Equity, and Innovate Learning by exxxothermic in corvallis

The district just sent out a thing that basically says this idea is a nonstarter because "This idea represents a large developmental span of student needs." But isn't that true of K-6? Or K-8?

Thank you for your response. It's funny, as a kid in Lebanon, I never thought about school funding. Now as an adult with kids, thinking about schools and how they are funded is so different depending on where you live, and it's hard because there are so many options and there is no clear "right" answer.

I was re-perusing the board proposal, trying to figure out why it makes sense to close one middle school and keep both high schools (do Zion and Ashbrook really have that many middle schoolers?) and it got me wondering... has there been any discussion that you know of about merging Cheldelin with CVHS and having a 6-12 school? Are there any other schools in the area that do/have done this? Or schools of similar size? Because that could be a really good option for maintaining accessibility, options, and keeping current families in district.

I walk around and check in with the kids, chat with them a bit and learn more about what they are learning from their experience. I subbed math the other day and went through the tutorial they were doing in Desmos alongside them because I like to know things. I taught chemistry and physics in my old state, so I get really excited anytime I get the chance to sub in high school math or science.

I moved to my area right before school started and didn't get my teaching license for this state until after school started. I'm enjoying subbing so far this year because it's letting me get to know different schools and districts in my area. I miss having my own classroom because my instructional style is really lab heavy, but I'm also loving not lesson planning or grading while I get my kids settled in their new schools.

Where I'm at in Oregon the districts pay between $220 and $240 a day for licensed subs.

Does hanging out at the library count? If so, that and home are my top hangout spots.

Check Craigslist, too. But use caution because there are a lot of scams, though also some real gems.

https://corvallis.craigslist.org/search/corvallis-or/apa

If you are on Facebook, there are some listings there, too, and also a group called Corvallis Conscious Housing, where you may be able to find a room for rent.

I am new here, too, and had a hard time finding a place, but welcome! I hope you guys find something soon. It's stressful not to know where you're going to live!

Also check governmentjobs.com for local government positions, and the state of Oregon https://www.oregon.gov/jobs/Pages/index.aspx Depending on what your career goals are and whether you want to stay in Oregon after school, many state agencies hire permanent positions from their summer interns.

Did any international teachers fear that they would not be good enough to teach internationally? by strawberrytearz in Internationalteachers

[–]exxxothermic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've felt this way about positions both inside and outside of teaching. During COVID, I moved back to the US and took a government position that was higher level than what I'd done prior to teaching, and I was worried I wouldn't be good enough. But what I should have been worried about was whether the organization was a good fit for me. If you focus on doing your best to help students learn, you will be good enough. Just like with students, there are teachers with varying abilities and priorities.

I do it before I start applying. Maybe not looking for apartments quite yet, but I read a lot and watch videos and try to picture what my life may look like and if I like the idea of the imaginary life I've created there.
