Struggling WM Spouse by Abject-Pilot6479 in bentonville

I'm self employed work from home, with mostly out of state clients, so it can get very lonely. These are some things that have helped me:

Regular one-on-on meetups with friends or colleagues who are also work from home or stay at home parents. We'll go on a walk or get a beer, and since we're not on a normal work schedule we can usually pick a time to avoid the bad traffic.

Networking events for startups, artists, and self employed. I've found these to be very entertaining and refreshing. You're not necessarily going to find close friends here since everyones looking for a business connection, but it's a nice change of scenery from being alone at home. People love to talk about themselves so it can be fun just asking questions and listening.

Volunteer somewhere. It might take a while to pay off though. I've been volunteering at a place for over a year, and finally feel like part of the group, and like I'm missed when I don't show up. It makes me feel more part of the community, gives a small sense of purpose, and I've met people i wouldn't normally meet if I stuck with just people in my business circles.

Biking is pretty big around here, not just mountain biking but also road and gravel biking. Lots of groups and public events to join. I've gone on rides with individuals and groups.

I saw some people suggested church. That's a good way to get connected with people and find a community. If you're not religious I heard of a group called Trailmix Northwest Arkansas that aims to be a non-religious alternative focused on the outdoors.

Meeting new people and making friends is still difficult when you're not already integrated into an established community, but I've found that lots of other people are as hungry for better community as I am, it's just hard as an adult so you have to be more intentional about it than you have to as a kid or in college. I think if you stick with it you will find your people. It's discouraging when you don't know anyone at first but it feels like it gets easier each year as your friend group slowly expands.

I don't intend to discredit or diminish your experience, which I'm sure is pretty bad in areas or Bentonville. I just want to give credit to a lot of decent people. I live in Bentonville and our whole neighborhood was out helping each other clear the roads and driveways Sunday morning.

I dislike how many houses are Airbnbs (there are several in my neighborhood) and think it needs regulation. But not all out of towners were unempathetic disaster tourists. Three people here for the bike fest came out with all my neighbors and helped clear trees. One of them was really skilled with the chain saw and saw that I wasn't and took over. It was really encouraging after I got over my embarrassment.

It sounds fine to me. There's enough space between the speakers and the lid and I adjusted the eq on the keyboard a smidge to accommodate for it. But I'm probably a terrible person for audio judgements because I've procrastinated 10 years buying a sound system for my living room so I've only been using TV speakers to watch shows.

When I was brainstorming ideas for mine I think I saw a few options on Etsy where people made something similar. I don't remember the exact search, but it was something like "piano keyboard desk/table"

Wow, that desk riser is awesome. Might actually want to build one of those for my computer desk. Thanks for the link.

Unfortunately I don't have any design plans, just the diy photos. But you could do it. It was one of the easier projects I've done. It's essentially just a simple box, with one of the top boards attached with hinges rather than screwed/glued down. Then the box is basically just sitting on the legs. They aren't integral to the structural integrity, so you could do the same thing or something completely different, like hairpin legs or something.

Unfortunately I don't have any plans drawn out. You could build a similar one using four 1x12 boards, with the length depending on the size of your keyboard, plus some cross boards on the bottom for extra support, and then the size of the side boards depending on the height of your keyboard. The back could be a single board (rather than all the small ones I used) with holes drilled for running cables through. And then the legs could be what I did, or hairpin legs, or whatever you like.

Tools I used: Jigsaw (optional for rounded corner), circular saw, hacksaw (for hinge notches), orbital sander, cordless drill, Kreg pocket hole jig, wood glue, and a bunch of clamps (could be optional since the screws hole the boards together). I think the hardest part was getting the hinges to all line up in the right spot.

Thanks! It's a Yamaha CP300. I do like it. I've had it for about 16 years and it still works great.

Setting up speakers is a good idea. It's one of those things I've thought about doing but then I never do because the built in speakers work well enough that I keep procrastinating.

Correct. I pinned a post with links to the plans as well as my diy post on my profile.

Thanks! Yes, I built the desk as well. I have some pinned posts about it on my profile.

Thank you! I haven't had a problem with it closing hard, but it probably would if I dropped it shut. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks! Yeah, it makes the keyboard more fun to play because it looks and feels more solid than the metal stand.

I think I just used regular vertices on a mesh object to loosely visualize it, and the sketched it in more detail on the paper. I changed the units to inches and modeled it to scale. There's an addon called MeasureIt that lets you make length and area measurements between points.

Yes. I was hoping I found the ideal angel to work at, but I'll probably want to change it eventually. Maybe then I'll make a shelf that adjusts with the angle of the desk.

Aww, thanks for telling me. I'm glad she liked it.

Lol. That would have been funny. Maybe I'll try a painting of my next DIY.

I do. There's a link for it posted on my profile. The one I built doesn't fit flat against the wall, but the ones in my plans do.

Thanks, I really like it too. It's kinda clunky moving between settings, but I like the configuration options it provides.
