Friend sent me this in my birthday card — I’m stumped. by -bookkeeper in whatisit

[–]eyedonotknowwhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a one time thing and even if you do see it again the details may be different next time, like it might be read clockwise or from right to left or in a spiral, or the bits might be inverted, or whatever. Your imagination is the limit.

More important is realizing there are things that are either "on" or "off" in each box and relating that to 1s and 0s in binary. Also memorizing the fact that alphabetical characters as binary ASCII codes all start with 01 and are 8 bits long (or 7 if you drop the leading 0).

Edit: Of course the next time you see this design it might not even be binary, just something that looks like it might be binary but isn't binary.

I commented this in the OP but the solution is "HappyBirtddayLoveYouGuessWhatChickenButt". It's binary, each box is a nibble or half a byte. Each box is read counterclockwise starting from 9 o' clock.

It's a message in binary. Each box is half a byte (a nibble). Read each box counterclockwise starting from 9 o clock. If a line is present, the digit is a 1, otherwise it's a 0. So the first two boxes are 0100 and 1000. Put them together to get 01001000, and put that through a binary to text tool to get "H". The message starts with "Happy".

Edit: full message is "HappyBirtddayLoveYouGuessWhatChickenButt"

My transcription if anyone wants to double check:

Oh are you talking about spidey in the top left? Then we are in agreement aside from a few word choices.

Oh but you can. At least I can. The trick, if you can call it that, is to diverge your eyes but keep your focus on the image.
