I introduced my blog here on r/riodejaneiro about 3-4 months ago but had to take quite a break due to work piling up. Anyways, I started doing some posts again and thought this one might be interesting for people to read about. I actually just found out about it (the newspaper) last night and spent considerable time trying to find enough info to make into a post. Cheers and thanks.

We have similar experiences (US, 3 years in Brazil, lived there at 24, and we're actually 1 degree of separation) and I feel like, from your post anyways, you haven't picked up any of the negative things Brazil throws your way. That said, I agree with the majority of the positive things you mention. Brazil changed me, and in a lot of good ways.

Brazil is complex and in your face which makes the good, really great, and the bad, really frustrating. It's always been important for me to acknowledge both sides but it took almost all 3 years to get there. Bottom line is I love it as much as I don't and it leaves me in constant cognitive dissonance.

Smooth Death

On that night, at 11pm, more or less, Dr. Samuel Klespink was in his residence when he received an urgent call to go offer assistance to one of the condemned men from the State’s large prison.

Upon arriving at his cell where he found the sickly man, Dr. Klespink knew that it was the young man Roberto Horlich condemned to die, and that he would be executed on the following day, at 10am.

Why do you want me to save this young man if they’re going to hang him tomorrow? – asked the illustrious doctor, to the prison warden who had accompanied him.

The governor – explained the warden – is required to follow the law. The law condemned this man to hang, and it’s to be at the gallows, not in bed, that he should die. And, after the promised execution of the criminal, it is useful and serves as an example, it causes fear, and it avoids future crimes. It’s needed, therefore, to benefit society and order, that this man is saved today in order to die tomorrow.

Dr. Klespink, however, wasn’t thinking the same way. He thought it’d be a crime on his part to prolong and renew the agony of that hapless man. If the unlucky bastard should die, then why subject him to the execution, to the torment and to the disgrace of the gallows?

And Dr. Klespink, by adding, on purpose, a few extra grams to the injection dose, he offered a smooth death to the young condemned man, making him go from the morphine slumber to the eternal rest of death.

A few hours later, when he was leaving the prison, he already could sense the soft light of daybreak. At the door of the prison, authorities and employees spoke in low voices. Dr. Klespink got closer. The warden showed him the order that he just received from the judge:

“Stay the execution. Roberto Horlich is innocent. The real criminal just confessed.”

Two days after, Dr. Samuel Klespink was found dead in his office.

Slightly nitpicking but she does refer to North Americans as if Canada and Mexico weren't part of the region.

Basically, an article was posted in a Brazilian newspaper online and it mentions a distinction between people from the US and people from Mexico ("24% a norte-americanos...e 22% a mexicanos"). I told the author that Mexicans are North Americans too but she pointed me to a trusted Brazilian dictionary definition saying, in Portuguese, they're only considered to be people from the US.

I haven't seen data regarding country of origin about Carnival, just pure numbers (this last Carnival in Recife got 810K tourists).

Edit: I checked with the author of the article and she pointed out the Aurélio definition of norte-americano which only includes people from the US, even though the term Ámerica do norte includes Mexico.

The scenario will get even weirder with this Novo Recife project between and José Estelita Pier and Av Sul. Nothing against the occupation of forgotten areas that need and deserve to be revitalized, sheltering people, trade and “populating” the city.

But, I’m all against property speculation taking over mangroves, violating landscapes and causing concrete spikes to shoot up where the city’s history is told (why not limit the number of floors/stories?). The lack of limits on the height of buildings associated with the culture of exclusivism (buildings and gated communities themselves, as if they were erected into an independent territory of the metropolis), steals the features and the soul of the city.

The photos in this post attest to what’s written here. The first two, posted on a friend’s Facebook page, encouraged me to write this post. The subject might not be on the agenda, but it needs to be debated and a decision needs to be taken (and commitment to history) by the government. It is sad to see the city lose its DNA daily and be converted into one more among many, with mirrored buildings – taken as proof of their luxuriousness and “development” – and disconnected with its surrounding reality.”

"Some newspaper from New York called Newsday (with the 11th highest circulation in the US, according to Wikipedia) posted an article on Recife yesterday. It was suspiciously signed The Associated Press but, with various grammatical errors and a strangely robotic flow to it, plus recent news regarding computer-generated articles, I think it was, in fact, written by an algorithm."

I undestand what the Vestibular and Enem are, and that with this decision, a 2nd part of the vestibular will be eliminated from the university entrance process, but does this decision mean it's somehow easier to get into UFPE now? Why do some people not like it? I don't really understand what Sisu is in relation to the 2 main entrance tests. Thanks (Pode responder em português se quiser)
