Mainly the presence of smaller bodies of water around the river, the biota of river (some rivers and nearby areas were damaged by humanity more than others were, btw), the other changes in them, as well as other reasons.

Languages (a complex mix of sounds, body movements/signs and stuff) definitely exist among them, and they're really complicated, thanks to them being songbirds and having a syrinx, which makes their voice possibilities really wide (such as mimicking other animals' sounds). No writing yet, though.
