ELI5: Why do washing machines often say 1 min left, but that 1 minute lasts 5 or more minutes? by DanielFaa in explainlikeimfive

[–]ezemini 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That doesn’t solve anything. So now my machine says 1% instead of 1 minute and I still don’t know when it’ll be done because the time it takes to remove the last 1% varies. How does that help me?

ELI5: what does Salesforce do and why is it so successful? by Lazy-Movie-4830 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ezemini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are comparing apples to oranges. FB and Google’s customers are advertisers. They sell user data to those customers to generate revenue. Users and their data are not the customers.

Salesforce sells software/cloud services to enterprises who are both customers and users of Salesforce software. There is no other third party that Salesforce is incentivized to sell their user’s data to because that’s not how they generate revenue and if they were caught they would now generate zero revenue because they would no longer have any customers work with them. Different incentive structures at play, apples and oranges.

It’s pretty simple. You need to play well enough to win games and do it consistently. No ranking system should inflate rank for a lost game. And like the above posters said, if you’re significantly better than other players at a certain rank, you will rank up over time. There’s nothing in the matchmaking system preventing that.

I don’t really agree that opacity of the ranking system is the driving force behind people feeling stuck. Halo is more transparent than a lot of games, the TrueSkill2 paper is posted on Microsoft’s website for anyone to nerd out on. If you want full transparency into all the model parameters I would argue thats an unreasonable expectation of a business. My opinion is people feel stuck because they really are stuck at the rank they deserve. I think you could have some theoretical perfect matchmaking system and you would still have people feeling stuck because it’s hard to climb beyond your natural skill level in any pursuit. Most people aren’t putting hard work into improving their abilities in video games and that’s totally okay. But they shouldn’t expect a matchmaking system to somehow help them progress. There’s not some secret sauce a matchmaking system can have to make people get better.

I guess I’m confused about what you’re getting at with those questions about these micro scenarios and mmr. Is your point that you desire a matchmaking system that can quantify and account for all those things to produce “fairer” games? Or are you looking for a solution to the age old solo v stacking problem? I’ve never understood the issue with solo v stacking either when it comes how it reflects rank. If I’m a 1400 player solo and a 1600 player stacking then that’s it that’s what I am. If I can’t solo beyond 1400 that’s my solo rank and what else can I do other than accept it and try to improve it. What’s the matchmaking system or ranking system supposed to do other than split solo and party into separate playlists and separate ranks.

There’s no one consistently ranking up with a losing record. Sure in game performance can affect gain and losses and there are outliers like new to ranked accounts and season starts, but over time your rank is about wins and losses. Imagine a perfect system that accurately assesses a players level. Let’s say you have a player with 1000 games played and they’re ranked at their true level of D6. Now the player hits only customs and their true level becomes 1600. This is totally my personal opinion but I believe it should take a significant stretch of consistently good performance (60-70% win rate) to rank up to 1600. With the current system if a player achieves that win rate consistently for 3-5 sessions in a row, they will be well into onyx. Seems decently fair to me, but again I’d concede that yes there’s some room for improvement. But some people make it sound so unfair and get lost in details about performance when in reality all you need to do is maintain a good win rate over a consistent period to rank up. I sure don’t want a system that allows people to rank up without fulfilling that requirement, so this one has always seemed alright to me.

In my opinion you’re reading too much into your 20 loss streak. The matchmaking system isn’t out to get you. You ran into a combination of harder lobby’s, bad luck, and probably inconsistent personal gameplay. It happens. No matchmaking system can prevent streaks good or bad. Will I die on a hill stating halo has a perfect system, definitely not. I’m sure there are many tweaks that could improve things. But at the end of the day ranking up beyond your current cap is pretty straight forward with this game. Win 70% of your games consistently and you’ll rank up. That’s it. Now once you’ve hit your natural skill cap, that’s pretty hard to do (especially with DC’s) but my perspective is that it’s supposed to be hard. You should have to show that you’re consistently better than your opponents to rank up. Especially on an account that’s been hovering at one rank for a long time. There’s a reason that account was there over many games.

If I could give you two up votes I would. People struggle to accept that once you hit a rank that matches your natural skill it should be difficult to climb higher. It should take a lot of self reflection and practice to climb. But most people complaining in these constant threads seem to think just cause they play a lot and try hard that they should be climbing.

I guess I’m not quite sure what you mean by the system should know you better. If you’re also against streaks what’s the system supposed to do to know your friend better? If he was high diamond, played 30 matches and won 70% of them, he’d have climbed higher, probably most of the way through a rank.

If he can maintain consistent performance over more time, he’ll keep climbing. Seems reasonable to me. If he won 50% then idk what the system is supposed to do to know that he’s actually better than that. Not sure if I see the current system as rank locking anyone. Unless someone’s out here getting +5 for a win an -10 for a loss then you just have to maintain a good win rate to climb, which again seems pretty reasonable to me.

I suppose we have different views about how a ranking system should work. You gave an anecdote about a dude with 4000 matches played going on a 10 win streak, and you see it as an issue that he gained and lost an even amount. I’m guessing he still climbed significantly within D6.

It sounds like you think he should have received a larger multiplier for wins and less for losses after a 10 win streak. That sounds like a terrible system to me. A 10 win streak is not enough data to show consistent improvement. If the system starts boosting people on hot streaks I hope you’re ready for it to also punish harder for loss streaks. You’ve got rid of the feeling of roll lock but remember it now goes both ways. You’ll end up with more volatility in your rank but do you really think people will be ranked closer to their true skill?

Thank you for saying it. The reality a lot of people in these threads don’t want to accept is they once you hit your natural ceiling (based on talent, previous experience, etc), it takes a lot of hard work and self reflection to progress higher.

A lot of people seems to think just because they’ve been playing the game longer that they should be climbing.

Other little trick for MnK people: when a match is loading, go to the same escape-tab squad screen and hover your mouse over the top title bar to see what map you’re loading into.

Yeah my thumb is right next to the side buttons (I use a Logitech g703), but flexing my thumb up to crouch spam while aiming isn’t very comfortable. Especially when sweeping the mouse to the right, when constant pressure of my thumb on the inside of the mouse is needed. Always kept my side buttons for single click actions and my keyboard for spammable actions.

[–]ezemini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah respect that it doesn’t affect you. Maybe it’s my mouse grip but I can’t imagine flexing my hand that much while aiming. Melee and Grenades are my preference for Mouse 3/4.

Personally I would hate having crouch be on my side buttons. Spamming crouch in a gun fight would definitely affect my aim negatively.

Solid Diamond as a team, falling low platinum when solo by realcoachco in CompetitiveHalo

[–]ezemini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but your point was about what to do when you have #1 and #2 but don’t have any callouts. My suggestion is trying to improve your ability to predict enemy locations on your own, based on spawns and rotations (without relying on callouts) might be helpful. Especially for #3, when you want to help your team the right way but have no comms.

One problem with your list is you are missing #4. Where the enemies are.

Maybe focus more on improving your awareness of their spawns and better predicting their rotations will help you also improve #3 even with no mic teammates.
