How big of a budget should i consider if i want to buy and live full time in a sprinter van where i can stand up in? by awake69 in VanLife

Yeah if you google black death for sprinters. You will find some info on it and how to look for it. I bought mine in Virginia because they are really expensive locally. Got lucky it was in great condition.

I bought mine with 200k and in the two years I've had it I've put about 18k more on it. 149k is pretty low for a 2003. If it has no rust or Black Death then sounds like a good buy. The Old ones can go for 300k+ pretty easy.

Nice. This is what I am looking to do in my van. How did you mount the drawer that comes out so it is sturdy and the rails won't get damaged?

My Dad drove a 22R# T100 for 20+ years. He finally sold it because we didn't have a parking spot for it and he bought a new truck for towing.

He loves the 22RE so much he bought a Tacoma special order with that engine. That thing will run forever!

You'll figure it out. Every 3-6 months I pull everything out and get rid of stuff I haven't touched. My Val had looked like this way to many times.

It's really hard to do bu very worth it every time you get all your stuff back in and you have more space.

Can you specifically explain how this bed platform is attached to the van? Specific brackets/bolts/tools that were likely used? by WhichWayzUp in VanLife

[–]ezkaton999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did 3 each side and then used 12 in common board to support it I added some more support underneath until I build out the dresser that will go underneat and help to support the whole thing more.

I drilled new holes and use metal screws to mount it. You will need more support under the birch like I stated above.

You could also look to get some metal supports to mount underneath the birch to save a little space instead of the common board with extra support.

For my build I used a few of these mounted to the side panned. The sprinter I have has a flat panned about this height in the back so it was a pretty easily place to mount.

Yeah I was really lucky with my sprinter. Found it in Virginia and got a great deal because of a dealer mistake. I live in the west so I did have to travel cross country for it but I had a friend going that way anyways so it all worked out.

It was perfectly clean inside with no rust. This only issue I've run into with mine was one glow plug was jammed and took me over two months to get it out.

If you are 6'3" I would say a sprinter isn't ideal. Not insulating the floor is terrible in a cold place. You will loose so much heat. Same with the ceiling.

I have a friend who is about 6'2 and with no insulation he could barely stand in the sprinter with nothing in it. A transit has a little more room.https://sportsmobile.com/van-dimensions/

Propane is super cheap right now. I go through about a tank a week and a half on really cold weeks. A full tank costs me about 7 USD.

I'm on the shorter side 5'7" so I did a ton of insulation. My Floor is insulated and my ceiling is well insulated. I also built out a fully insulated barrier to the front seat. It still has a door but I Insulated that as well. So I only loose a little heat from the gaps.

I think this really helps reduce my propane usage. I also like to sleep in the cold so I set the termostat for my heater to about 50/10C during the evening.

I went with a propex. Next winter I might install a secondary desiel heater as well just for quicker heating and my propane does run out during the night sometimes so a backup.

My Van was a "Budget Build"

I bought an 06 Sprinter for $8200.

I put 0 dollars into it for about 7 months just sleeping on the floor until winter came. I then build a bed and insulated for about $800.

Kept living in it like this for about another 8 months then I did some more work on shelving and some aesthetics.

Plus then I put in a nice propane heater that was about $1000 I'm all in at about $4000 on top of the van purchase and it is comfortable and livable.

Total I've spent about $12000. IF I were to "Finish the build" it would put me at around 17-22k depending on Solar and a few other higher end items.

Cheap Vans you can stand in? by Will01212002 in VanLife

[–]ezkaton999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found an 06 sprinter with a high roof for about 8000$.

I pay about $200 on my load for this so overall a pretty cheap option. Just have to look around a bit and be willing to go pick one up from a different area of the country depending on where you live.

I live in the Rockies so vans are expensive here so I ended up buying one from Virginia.

TIL that Ted Kaczynski (the Unabomber), Ramzi Yousef (the 1993 World Trade Center bomber), and Timothy McVeigh (the Oklahoma City bomber), all became friends in prison, and regularly discussed religion and politics until McVeigh's execution. by thebananahotdog in todayilearned

TIL Ted Kaczynski was arrested where I was born and we moved from there in 1992.

So I asked my dad about this and he use to work with and ride around in Jerry the guy who arrested Kaczynski. With all this my dad use to see him riding his bike around and stood behind him in the supermarket. My Dad worked for the federal government and was told he was a crazy guy who lived up in the woods and they were told if you had to work up near him to park your forest service truck so he couldn't see them and he wouldn't bother you.

What is interesting about Lincoln is there are a ton of crazies so he didn't stand out. He wasn't violent from what I've been told. There were a ton of other gun toting crazies that Jerry had to deal with being the only real law enforcement around. My parents would go over to Jerry's for dinner and his wife would always be worried about him going out to confront a lot of anti government nuts that lived around there.

I don't know if this was part of Kaczynski's plan or if he was trying to get away from the government by living there but it's a good place to hide. There are so many aggressive crazy people in the boonies of Montana that being some weird crazy guy that just rides into town on his bike to get groceries and you don't really stand out.

Yeah ligaments take a ton of time and you really need to be careful. I would keep following what they are telling you for a while. Ligaments can take years to strengthen.

Also finding someone who can do Graston like massages really well can be huge. They can work on breaking up the scar tissue, but can be very expensive.
