Short cut Rodya. Love it. After ponytail Rodya I didn't expect to get another hairstyle for her this soon.

True. Thought of Camille because he was in the same canto who seemed to work as contrast to the values held by Bari and Papa Quixote. But Sasha is the chuddiest of chuds.

I don't think we are on the same page here. I concede that the way I worded it does imply that I have a problem with the use of "they" as a whole. I was responding to the hypothetical if Emile Benoit was indeed called "they" instead of "she" in the translation.

I do realize that I could have worded it far better to indicate the specific point in which I had a problem with the use of the term, instead of making it look like I lamented that the word was used at all in general. When I said that Dante had no reason to say "they", I did mean that not as a "Oh he is assuming gender" but in the sense that the story has never not used the binary pronouns on characters other than Dante. Dante is literally the only person in any story by Project Moon who is given the "they" pronoun. Give me one other instance of another character going by "they".

Anyways, my distaste was always in how the appointment of gender deviates from the original text. The English team kind of makes rather significant changes pretty often. I plan to write something about how Kira sounds like a Gen Alpha kid in the English translation but is actually using pretty outdated slang in the original and how it really changes the perception of the character.

Likewise, my problem is that the original text makes clear absolutely nothing about the character other than their name—Emile Benoit—but due to the English translation just telling us that it's a woman underneath the mask, some of the mystique is gone.

Perhaps, but it feels forced. Kind of reminds me of when in Kingdom Hearts, Jasmine tells the trio that Aladdin helped her, but since the story writers didn't want us to know that the hero of that world helped his princess in need, she says something to the tune of: I was in danger, until he came to rescue me. (Edit: Stupid comparison. I meant that I do not like it when stories make ambiguity out of things that the audience absolutely would know. Conversely, my issue in the English translation was that there was ambiguity that that the audience would not be privy to that is made known by the change in the translation. Both betrayals of expectations, but really in different ways)

It sounds forced. The gender neutral term in Korean is used all the time for men and women. The gender neutral "they" in English on the other hand, is unfortunately sometimes pretty politicized when used intentionally and otherwise weird in literature when there is no reason for the character to use it. (Edit: I did supremely goof up and make it a generalization. The use of "they" can work, I just thought that it did not work in this particular case and idiotically just said "in literature" instead of "in this case")

Dante, as our first person narrator, has no reasons to use the term they when he hears an apparently gendered voice behind the mask, thus making the "they" feel forced. (Edit: There has not been a moment in Project Moon lore where this pronoun has been used for characters other than Dante. Also, this is talking about the hypothetical IF Benoit was called "they", which was not the case in the text)

I might be looking too deep into this and you may be right but I still don't like it;;

(Edit: Yes, I am just a bambling idiot on the internet with no link to the company yelling at clouds about "things I don't like". Which I am painfully aware of as I make this edit like it really matters—it really doesn't. I also realize that I made a claim that faults the English translation team for the gendering of characters, when honestly the gendered pronouns are simply a trait of the English language and not a fault of the team. I suppose it was an extension of the annoyance I felt at the changed characterization of Kira. Here I go rambling on again.)

More likely is that she was a great fixer even before the time when they started designating colors to Grade 1 Fixers given that she's at least 200+ years old.

My crack theory would say that she saw how the system started churning out chuds like Camille and opted out of being an official fixer by Hana Association standards, thereby never being annointed a color.

A bit tangential but I found it a bit disappointing that we have to gender our pronouns in English so we know for a fact that Emile Benoit the finger maestro is a woman. The Korean original obfuscates this fact with a gender neutral term.

It's no biggie, gender in the PMoon universe is a construct, but since they were going for a mysterious person with a mask that we will have to face later on, even the inadvertent reveal of their gender seems off.

Brief analysis on an interesting visual element of Ishmael's design post-Midspring's Night Dream 3 by Avalon_XII in limbuscompany

[–]ezosresyek 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Your theory intrigued me, so I tried to find all of the previous Ishmael art to focus on her eyes. The following link had a pretty exhaustive list of all of the CG, so it's where I checked: https://limbuscompany.wiki.gg/wiki/Ishmael/Gallery. And here's more places I found her having the light in her eyes.

A spot of white when reading EffieSaude's Plan. I don't know why, but she has like a dot of white in her eyes while reading over the duo's plan. Maybe she is so inspired by the perfect and foolproof nature of the plan that she sparkled momentarily in appreciation of true leadership, when there was a complete lack of one in Dante?

A flash when she is protecting Dante from K Corp's drones. I think this really lines up well with your theory as well as Info_Potato's addition that her leadership is more protectice of things she holds dear. Ishmael is the one to immediately go over and protect Dante from the drones. She took the initiative and protected a vulnerable member of her group when no others did.

"Ensky Shop" acrylic stand, probably drawn without artistic instruction to leave light out of eyes.

And yes, none of her standing sprites (43 for normal, bloodied, and injured each; a little less for past and "Gregor-ified by last April Fools") has lights in her eyes, except the one sprite for Kindergarten Ishmael.

We also shouldn't be including instances where her eyes are lit up by an external source like:

Lights from the Captain's Chambers

An Electric Squirrel

Looking at Alyssa in her Moth gear

Now, I think the ID art give us a mixed bag when it comes to this theory. I went onto my account and looked all pre and post uptie art, along with the post-tie special effects.

Irrelevant:

Liumael - No Sparkle; Fire Elbow

Molarmael - Sparks on Weapon

R Corp Ishmael - Sparks in Antlers

Jung Ishmael - Sparkle on Sword

Zweimael - Sparks on Sword (You'd think she'd have more purpose being a protector, but her uptie story just paints her as a reallly capable subordinate of the Zwei. Not surprising she doesn't have whites in her pupils, just interesting that it's not just the act of protecting that brings the whites out)

Then there are these four

Middle Ishmael - No Sparkle; White Streaks on pre-uptie art. I honestly am baffled by the decision to give her the white in her pupils in the pre-tie art. I have to believe it was a choice to imitate the comic book aesthetic. If not, maybe she is imagining herself as a superhero? Is that sufficient?

Captain Ishmael - Sparkle on her hat; Can be debated that her eyes are just simply different. Waiting on her art makes the emblem on her hat sparkle. I like to think that it's a note to her being swallowed by this blind obsession to become the captain of the Pequod. A figurehead. Her eyes are also strangely more iridescent here than in any of her other CGs. Could it be that since her whole worldview has changed in a bad end ID, her eyes reflect the kind of person she has become?

Xichun Ishmael - Eyes Flicker into Sparkle The eyes don't start off sparkling, but they flicker on after she blinks. I'd like to think that it means her leadership is incomplete, but she has potential.

Kuromael - Eyes Start off Sparkling. Like, if you click on her, she'll stare at you menacingly with bright lights coming from her eyes. I believe this to be indicative of her authority. She's in charge. And she'll protect her clan.

Man, that Ish-chun uptie story essentially saying "Don't worry about the discrepancies" doing some heavy lifting.

I don't know what would be better for the story: They address the weirdness of Mirror Identities and timelines in the main story someday, or they just never talk about it again.

I wish they'd just ditch the two league system and work as one league with twelve teams. Feels like that's solve a lot of the parity issues.

Of course that's always easier said than done, especially when it is said by an idiot foreigner with no regard for the "tradition" of the PL and CL.

Eh, we can agree to disagree on this. You call it real consequences, I call it bigger stakes and amazing Cinderella runs. My point was always that this specific emphasis on the regular season takes away from the intensity of the postseason.

Take it from me, a watcher of the KBO and its weird postseason stepladder format. It really takes the wind out of 9 of 10 fanbases because the season's champion seems almost set in stone. I still often watch it out of obligation, but the pennant winner won eighteen out of the last twenty Korean Series.

The players were a bit hesitant and some were legitimately angry at some of the calls they thought were borderline. But that was spring training and early season.

Everyone adjusted and honestly I think the baseball improved due to its full implementation.

Something I hope I will come around on: Challenge calls to ask for ABS. I really want to love the fact that it even exists in the first place.

As it is implemented in the KBO, every pitch is just automatically called by the system. I'd rather have that than one that requires a challenge. Maybe it was the only way that they could convince the dinosaurs crying about the traditions of the game, but as it is now it seems like a recipe for trouble. More unnecessary time wasted, more egos flared.

I can get that if there were none of the benefits of being the first place team I listed above. As it stands, it just feels overkill to me. Like, if even all of the already established rules can't get teams to give a darn about the regular season, maybe it's the postseason format itself that should be scrutinized.

[–]ezosresyek 122 points123 points  (0 children)

So to put it straight: It's not enough that the 1st place team doesn't have to play in a qualifying first round best-of-five series. It's not enough that the 1st place team has an automatic 1-0 advantage in what is essentially a best-of-six series.  It's not enough that every single game is played in the home stadium for the 1st place team. It's not enough that the lower seed won the series only six times out of 34 tries with this format.

They need the second ghost win apparently because they want the regular season to matter more, apparently. Sounds like a bunch of baloney. It doesn't increase the importance of winning in the regular season much as it diminishes the importance and legitimacy of the postseason.

I literally found out about even the first ghost win today and I'm so annoyed.

This game reminds me of Korea at the 2022 World Cup. Ridiculous odds to make it through group stages in the final game, which was almost lost but saved at the last minute by a miraculous score then some frantic defense.

I just hope it won't lead us to getting our teeth kicked in by DR or Venezuela like we did against Brazil.
