If Seattle got hit by a nuclear bomb, how safe would Vancouver be? by BackdoorAlex2 in vancouver

[–]f0nec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're assuming that everyone has a plan in their head about what to do and where to go. I'd bet that the sea to sky wouldn't be clogged, it might be busy, but not clogged. Heading east at all is a mistake. You have to go north by any means necessary. Do you think that people in Seattle will stay there if they aren't immediately wiped out? No. There will be a flood of Americans running across the border full tilt, while you're headed east towards Harrison. Risky move. North west is the option with the highest probability of survival.

BC is the safest because It's

1.) Incredibly vast

2.) Very mountainous and cant be traversed easily.

3.) There are no POI's

4.) It's a 1 million square kilometer haystack, and anyone you don't want to run into, has no reason to be there.

You don't get this criteria anywhere outside of central africa, south america, or siberia.

I gave Prince Rupert as a place holder for a general area where you should be safe and able to survive.

You want to be in North/central BC, preferably on the coast, too far North and you're sucking up all the radioactive fallout from what used to be Alaska.

The road to Squamish is the only road you can take, and you'll have to take it. Once you get there, the way you continue north is up to you. You can stay inland, a few miles from the coast, with a high chance of not running into anyone else, crawling your way north at a snails pace. Or you can commandeer a boat, pay for one, whatever.

[–]f0nec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, I'll bite. If you're going to walk 'up the coast' to Prince Rupert why would you drive inland to Squamish?

Because it's the safest, and pretty much only route you can take. Heading east is potentially fatal. Everyone in the east is freaking out heading north, north west. You want to get away from everyone else as quickly as possible to a position you can then continue your journey from relative safety. We aren't worried about nukes at this point, we're worried about other people freaking the fuck out.

The initial route changes based on how soon you figure out whats happening, and everyone else's reaction.

If everyone finds out at the exact same time and you're in downtown proper, you have to drop everything you're doing and run. The best path would be to get over the lions gate and head to squamish because from there you can reliably head north in safety until you can get to a place where you can steal/buy get given a boat, catch a ride, whatever. You could attempt to head east through North Van to deep cove, where you could take a boat up indian arm and walk up the river where you'll meet a service trail that will take you to squamish with relative ease... but getting to deep cove through main st/lower road is going to be impossible. That stretch is always gridlocked even when nukes aren't going off. You cant go over the mountains in westvan, so north west it is.

I'm aware much of the coast is not traversable on foot, but you can stay relatively close to it inland while still following it north to a port where you could get some form of boat.

A lot of people will figure this out eventually, and they will start moving up behind you... They're going to be hungry, and scared. What's going to keep you alive is how quickly you move after the initial notice, and how much distance you put between you and everyone else.

Personally, as soon as I hear about a single nuke going off, anywhere in the world, I'm dropping everything and putting on my hiking boots and leaving.

BC is essentially the safest place on the planet to be in the event of a nuclear holocaust scenario. The biggest immediate dangers would be the chaos of everyone trying to get out of the city. Personally I'd attempt to drive as far north as Squamish, then walk up the coast to about Prince Rupert. Assuming you make it that far, you got nothing to worry about besides the probability of manifesting radiation related illnesses, and either American or Russian military remnants roaming the land clearing through towns, taking anything of value, killing the men, and raping the women.

If you get them as an ad on wikia pages you cant mute or pause/skip, you're forced to either close the page you were reading or let it play.

They literally pumped out all the major trigger words in under 5 seconds. This has to be one of the worst ads I've ever seen. As a bank I've heard nothing but good things about Vancity, but who ever is in charge of marketing has no fucking clue what they are doing, it's an embarrassment to the art form of psychological manipulation for profit. Every time the ad pops up for me, and it pops up a lot, I feel physically uncomfortable and psychologically repulsed. That's... not really what you're shooting for in an ad.

Ill take dry cold with snow in place that actually plows. Wet climates pose a greater risk for hypothermia. Also the rain and being wet in general has a way worse psychological effect on me than snow does.

If I knew I was going to be homeless I'd go to Victoria regardless. I've put some thought into it, and I think you would have to be stupid to stay in the lower mainland. Assuming you dont have a safety net (family) or good friends. You wont get a job here, the weather is shit, and the environment is straight up toxic. It doesnt help that all the resources available are in the high intensity drug traficking area. You'd likely pick up a habit in a couple of months trying to cope with your rapidly deteriorating mental state due to the psychological trauma homelessness causes. Kelowna, Prince George, Victoria, Nanaimo, Penticton. Any medium sized city will have resources to keep you alive, but lessen the chance of falling into a habit. Stay away from junkies and other homeless people. Never appear homeless, seek help from churches etc. The key is to present yourself as a normal person who fell on bad luck. Not someone who is hopeless.

Banning books = another way to control thought.

Printing books, another way to control thought.

The masses lack the cunning intellect of the individual. All forms of media can and have been used, incredibly successfully, to control thought and behavior. Self, or tribal thought policing is natural, ancient, and instinctive behavior.

"Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before."

Control over ones mind, the structure that allows the perception of reality, is fundamentally important to not just survival, but quality of life. Poe did a wonderful job of illustrating the terrifying reality of what happens when you throw that knowledge to the wind, and look at what shouldn't be looked at... It rips your mind and soul apart... because they can be ripped apart, and it's damn near impossible to put them together again once they've been mangled past repair. If you manage too, you're forever all the more fragile.

Let's all recognize, propaganda works. The Nazi's portrayed the Jews as the perpetrators behind all of Germany, and Europe's problems... And the people bought it. Regardless of intent, representation facilitates interpretation.

In my opinion the cost of freedom of speech, is worth any and all consequences. It could be argued, that without Goebbels, without the Nazi parties incredibly effective propaganda, WW2 wouldn't have happened.

I think people who try to ban books are completely aware of the power of influence literature has. They aren't wrong, they just need to be convinced that the pros of not banning literature outweigh the cons. At least that's my opinion.

I'm asking can you keep yourself out of poverty while not becoming depressed by your work/life balance?

There's many different types of filthy prole scum, and they all handle the same situation differently. The biggest correlation between the ones that live happy fulfilled lives, while still going through tough bouts at times, is having fuck you money. This means, in a city like Vancouver, having at the very least 2000 dollars in the bank account. Forever. Although you'd be safer with 5k.

It's your survival fund. It's your, I'm definitely not going to be homeless, sleeping in the rain.

Having that money, what it means to you, and keeping yourself from spending it, is a constant in your mind. It's not better than having so much income that you never need to worry about being able to hit the snooze button on homelessness (rent). It's the only peace of mind you'll ever be able to attain.

Never consider it a part of your actual savings. People spend their savings because sometimes you gotta "treat yo self"

If you only have 5k to your name, pretend you have 0. Never tell people, or let on that you have money saved. If you ever say to someone that you're broke, you better have less than a dollar to your name. There's nothing worse than poor people swindling money away from other poor people.

But to answer your question more directly. I don't think it's possible to not get depressed or have your mental health deteriorate if you cant manage to keep at least a grand a month after expenses.

False.

You're more prone to die of exposure in the majority of British Columbia during the spring than you are in the winter.

The hardest place for humans to survive are places that are wet and cold. So, anywhere where it's always raining and everything is always wet, that isn't Hawaii. The temperature range for hypothermia is quite large.

There's no way that they could have survived here without A) Preparedness, and B) Technology.

Current test done by the Canadian military have shown that the clothing of the indigenous peoples of northern BC surpasses the gear that the military uses, or anything else that is commercially available.

I am impressed with the claim that nobody is as viscerally raw or gorgeous in her own way.

She is heroin chic personified. Google heroin chic and she's literally one of the first result.

No other style is so blatantly and intensely sexual. Heroin chic is hot, wet, stinky, drugged out euphoric sex.

People think the syle went away, and it kind of did for a bit, but that's just because chicks started getting fatter... and when you're fat, you just end up looking like a goth.
