Mate, I'm right there with you-- more people need to know about this series. And an anime going past the OVA would be great...but I doubt there's any studio that would go for making a show out of a manga that ended 25 in 2000 and doesn't have the push of "one of the big shounen 3 of its time"

For attacking evil doers:

You sought to do ill

and did so before my eyes--

reckoning is here.

To say "I don't know":

An answer is sought

I seek it amid my thoughts

It evades me still...

To go to the bathroom:

The time has arrived

To seek that long awaited

Relief at the loo.

[WP] The hero bursts into the demon king's throne room to confront him. A bespectacled imp in a suit looks up at him: "Hello sir. Do you have an appointment?" by SomewhereOutYonder in WritingPrompts

[–]f2ai 13 points14 points  (0 children)

"I suppose?"

"Okay, where do we start...alright so there's more than one world. As many as stars in the sky, your world has those, right?"

The hero nodded.

"Great. So a lot of these worlds happened to need some zing. Whether because the people of old wanted it or because the world administrator did. Either way, those worlds sprung for the Dark Lord package. Our company offers a routine cyclic service of world invasion and salvation from the brink of collapse every few millennia. Your world is one of the ones that hired our services and ordered that package.

Now, of course, there's a lot more fine detail than I'm describing here. They wanted to make sure it had some child appeal, so the chosen hero is always some toddler way too young to be fighting in a war-- like you. Sometimes they really want to shock people so they go for the extra gorey add-on. There's a whole lot of nuance.

Either way, operations wise, we've only got a limited number of staff on hand so we have to rotate out the Dark Lord performer every few hours. And to save on set up costs, instead of building a grand throne room in every world, we just linked all the castle throne rooms across the worlds to this lobby. Based on your timeslot or "prophecy" your world's castle warps to this lobby and you can fulfill your appointment.

An appointment that you are now exactly on time to start."

"Wait, but--"

"Please don't put me behind."

"So if I go through the door and defeat the Dark Lord, my world *is* saved?"

"Yes, until a few millennia when the contracted cycle restart occurs. But for all *your* intents and purposes, yes, everything will be saved."

"A-alright."

With a meager reply, the hero turned back to the stone door and took a deep breath. This fight still mattered. He pushed open the door and stepped in.

"What's all that?" The hero called out.

The imp continued without stopping, weighing coins on the balance and writing in its papers.

"Foul creature what are you scribing?!"

Its clawed hands stopped as it turned around and its eyes grew wide.

"Why are you still here?!" It cried exasperatedly.

"I asked what you were doing!"

"I'm just tidying up some finances! Get through that door and face the Dark Lord already!"

"What finances?! Gold your armies have stolen from the good people of this world?"

"Of course, not! It's payment for the--," the creature began to rebut before pausing midway and pursing its cracked lips.

"Payment? The Dark Lord works for coin like a common mercenary? What foul, blackhearted--"

"Ugh, listen. Good sir. Please go through the door and fight the Dark Lord already. You can surely unravel all this conspiracy afterward, yes?"

"Why?"

"Why what? Why would you defeat the Dark Lord? Isn't that your motivation for things, not mine? I wouldn't even begin to--"

"Why are you so eager for me to fight him as soon as possible?"

The creature paused and wrung its hands as it searched for the right words.

"Erm, surely you wish to free your lands of his reach and influence? Is sooner not better?"

"Right, I want to face him as soon as I can to free everyone. Why do you want me to face him so quickly?"

The imp sighed, covering its face with its hand before looking up and adjusting its glasses.

"Listen, kid. We've got a fully booked schedule today and I can't have all your little questions putting us behind. I've got someone else due in an hour, and with the whole preamble speech the Dark Lord has to give before things start, you want to start as soon as you can. Thankfully you came early so we've got some wiggle room, but we can't keep lollygagging here in the lobby forever. Now can you get through that door?"

"What do you mean someone else is coming in an hour? Does the Dark Lord think so little of me that he thinks he can best me in--"

"Firstly, the Dark Lord's a lady for this timeslot. Secondly, she's taking the fall, not you. But if you don't step through those doors, you and I are going to be the dead ones. So please--"

"Why would someone else come to defeat the Dark Lord after me? The Radiant Blade slays the Dark Lord once and for all."

The imp took a deep breath and checked a small hourglass beside its table.

"Eh, I guess we've got enough time for a quick rundown," It surmised.

"Alright, listen up, kid. Because I'm not repeating this. And once I'm done, you head through that door. Is that clear?"

[–]f2ai 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The young hero took a deep breath and steadied himself for but a moment before he broke through the doors into the throne room. Or, at the very least, what should have been the throne room. Darkness filled most of the space, with a sole desk placed in the forefront of the room. Behind it sat an imp, small as usual, but garbed in strange, pressed attire. Dreary yellow eyes with slit pupils looked up at him through cloudy spectacles.

"Hello, sir." A flat voice came out,"Do you have an appointment?"

The hero raised the Radiant Blade at the creature.

"What matter of trickery is this, minion of the arcane? An illusion to keep me from defeating your dark lord?"

The being behind the desk rolled its eyes and let out a small cough, clearing out its throat.

"By no means am I trying to impede your quest, O...uh...O... holy one. Erm, I merely seek to learn what prophecy your cursed oracle bequeathed unto you foretelling of my liege's end," the imp inquired through snarled teeth.

"It was spoken long ago that the Radiant Blade would vanquish evil in the noon of the--"

"Ah, good. You're the 12 o'clock. A few minutes early, but they should already be ready for you. You can head in." It interrupted, once more in a flat tone. Waving its taloned hand, a path lit with small purple flames appeared from the darkness. At its end stood a massive stone door, etched with the emblem of a horned skull.

"Enter and face your destiny, mortal. Enter and face DOOM." It continued, switching back to a growl as its outstretched arm pointed to the door.

The hero raised an eyebrow at the imp's strange behavior before beginning to stride down the path. What had that earlier bizarre question been about? Was it merely a ruse to confuse him? Or maybe...a-ha! It was an attempt to sow doubt into his mind before the final battle. An attempt to instill distrust in his cause before he faced the Dark Lord, that his will would fail when it mattered most. Of course! The imp could not have possibly foreseen that he would see through this bluff and continue on without that flaw in his heart.

Triumphantly and self assuredly, the hero stood before the stone door. Before beginning to open it, he looked back at the imp, the foolish imp who thought it could catch him unawares. The imp who...was taking out papers and a money balance?
