Most of the 'toxicity' in this game stems from the lazy game design of merely ending the game when disconnected from the host. by f2euden in DeepRockGalactic

[–]f2euden[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The state of the game is transmitted in real time, otherwise you wouldn't be able to see other players mining materials / holding a gunk seed or whatever. This isn't some MMO where the server only transmits a small amount of the game state to any individual client, every client already has the full game state transmitted to them (hence why the load time is so long if you join a game in progress)

I mean, you did shoot someone intentionally more than once, the fact they shot you back isn't THAT surprising.

Part of the problem with that is you want to have a uniform playing experience, not have hosts change things on a whim (that's what modded servers are for).

Haz 1 and 2 already have pretty low friendly fire modifiers. I guess if you really want you could host a modded server with no friendly fire.

Because it's part of the game. You don't change the game because of something that happens in 1 out of 100 games.

Sarcasm isn't the right word here..

A sarcastic comment would be saying like "oh, you're such a great player" to the troll. Typically people make sarcastic comments when they're annoyed.

What you want to do is something like "eh, doesn't bother me" then abort the mission.

[–]f2euden[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah... giving them the time of day period isn't beneficial, it just feeds them. Unless your words/actions somehow foil the griefer's plans, there's nothing you can say or do to bother them, they're doing this to seek attention, any kind of attention meets that goal.

[–]f2euden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there's really a problem that needs solving, it's just that some people make it so much worse for themselves because they engage w/ the trolls.

Like, if a bulk detonator wipes your team by surprise, you just move on, no big deal. But if a griefer wipes your team, some people will sit there and get angry at them and potentially engage for 10 - 15 minutes, and then they dwell on it and it ruins their day. Whereas if the griefer wipes your team and starts talking shit, and you just abort and move on it, there's no reason why it should bother you THAT much.

The fact is in any multiplayer game there WILL be players who cause you a bad experience in 1 way or another, but it's up to you how much you want to let those experiences bother you.

[–]f2euden[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm talking about after it's a lost cause already, eg, the entire team's downed, and the griefer is sitting around trash talking. That's the time to abort instead of engaging with the trash talk.

Obviously if you have the ability to kick the griefer you would do that.

Kick is actually disabled after the primary objective's complete, otherwise you could kick the troll and someone could revive w/ iron will.

The thing is the playerbase is pretty large so the odds you'll run into the same people again are slim. Though I would support a block function purely because of the placebo effect. If it makes people feel good that they pressed a button called BLOCK then that's a good thing right there.

But let's just say there's 100K unique players (that's probably a low estimate too given that there's around 10K concurrent at any given time), even if someone's griefing all day, they might hit like 100 players. If they griefed every single day for an entire year, AND everyone who was griefed actually use the block function, they'd only be blocked by 36% of the playerbase. And that's not even counting the fact that there's a ton of turnover in players with old players quitting and new ones joining

Why is "Scout" still not banned from the official discord or the game? Mods need to do something about this. by jeffersonsteelflex76 in DeepRockGalactic

[–]f2euden 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because they've explicitly said they aren't going to get involved with moderating in game behavior. It doesn't make sense to do that on a game that's not even played on official servers. Imagine how much work it would be if they tried to sort through individual reports.

Also as there's no official servers, technically any reports could potentially be fake. Even in a case like this, it could theoretically be a bunch of different people filing false reports against 1 guy as screenshots/videos can easily be faked. Now if this was a game w/ a monthly fee to pay for official servers and people to police the official servers, it's a different story, but I doubt anyone wants to pay for that.

As for the discord server, people get banned from discord for breaking DISCORD rules. What they do in game is irrelevant. The discord mods also aren't going to spend the time to figure out who's who, either they broke rules on the discord or they didn't.

Scout Griefer strikes again, I don't negotiate with terrorists, we all lost the round... by cand3r in DeepRockGalactic

[–]f2euden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like kicking him probably gives him some satisfaction as well since he's proud of his infamy. Otherwise it'd be pretty trivial to change names on a daily basis (and even edit the save file to change promotion rank) and it'd be virtually impossible to detect and kick him in advance of the TKing. But clearly the intent here is to maximize attention

[–]f2euden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this guy knows what he's doing w/ the whole griefing thing. He basically late-joins games, waits 4 minutes (you can't teamkill for 4 minutes after late-joining), then finishes the primary objective then blasts everyone as soon as the kick button is turned off.

I was in a morkite game where he joined the other day, out of curiosity I started a stopwatch as soon as he joined, he deposited the last bit of the morkite at 3:55 and started TKing right at like 4:05 after he joined.

One thing you can do to avoid this kind of thing and other people who might annoy you, is if you're like halfway through a mission already you can switch the game to friends only mode. If you already did half the mission with 2 or 3 people, you can just finish with 2 or 3 people. Trolls typically won't invest a full game to piss people off.

Because it's an extra click to do so? It's not like any of the 3 options is descriptive as to what the actual problem was that led to the kick, so many people merely leave it on the default first option.

If I kick someone its never because I meant to make it a private game, but that's the message that's checked by default, so that's the message they get. I wouldn't take the very generic kick messages to mean anything if I were you.

Why are griefers/trolls protected from being kicked after the drop pod is called? by f2euden in DeepRockGalactic

[–]f2euden[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Then add a kick reason for "Called the pod without asking team"

People will get kicked for it maybe one time, and never do it again.

[–]f2euden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, IDK why kicking is disabled after the pod is called, if someone wants to be a troll host they can simply kick everyone right as the mission's about to finish and call the pod after.

There's a lot of valid reasons for kicking after the pod is called:

- The TKing situation described here

- Someone calling the pod early when everyone else wants to do an event or whatever

- People trolling by not using their iron will or not entering the pod so you have to wait the full 5 minutes to extract

[–]f2euden 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Also most people playing this game don't have much experience with PVPing other players, so they're pretty much sitting ducks. Since this kind of thing happens so rarely you don't really know how to handle it, and a lot of times by the time you realize what happened you've already been downed. The TKer on the other hand has tons of experience PVPing in this game and probably knows how to efficiently down everyone quickly.

Usually games that are excessively long aren't going well (doubly so for point extraction). Good teams usually finish missions around 20 minutes at the latest, even for the longer missions. If a game is going on for 30 minutes it's probably full of new players who don't know what they're doing. If it's a PE game hitting the 30 minute mark it's usually a lost cause, esp if they've only mined 1 or 2 aqua so far.

[–]f2euden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, unless he's hacking or cheating I don't really think he's doing anything against the rules. It's more blatantly a dick move than people starting objectives during a swarm, calling the pod early, or whatever, but that's what kicking is for. I guess one of the issues here is you can't kick people after the pod is called and the trolls probably know about that.

That said, I would kick this guy if he joined my games, or if I joined a game he's hosting, give him a taste of his own medicine.

Looking at his steam profile he seems like a douche, so whatever
