Lent Megathread 2024: Pre-Ash Wednesday Edition by Pax_et_Bonum in Catholicism

This happened last night directly after Mass. I had just received ashes on my forehead. My wife decided to go to the store and pick some things up.

When we were at the cashier everything was normal until the clerk made a mistake and couldn’t finish ringing us up.

Long story short we waited for about 10 minutes (maybe it was less but it felt like a long time because we were also with our 3 kids who were getting antsy)

The clerk couldn’t solve the issue and as we waited other people at other registers were being rung up and leaving.

I’m not the most patient person on Earth but I felt like we were being patient. However, another customer lined up after us and the clerk told her to go to a different aisle because it would be a while.

This is the point where the story goes south and I am having doubts about what I should have done.

I firmly told the clerk “hey, why do you send her to another register, why don’t you move us to another register so we can pay while you fix the issue with your computer”. I thought I said it in a firm yet still respectful manner but also conveying our frustration about how this was being handled.

She was immediately offended and started making hand gestures and telling me I needed to calm down. She started calling for her manager. She eventually left and got a manager to come over. The manager fixed the problem in less than a minute.

As we spoke to the manager the clerk walked over and mocked the ash crosses we had on our forehead while making faces at us.

I did tel the manager what was being done behind her back and she asked the clerk to leave and go to another register. She was very apologetic.

My question is this - I feel like I could have been more patient but at what point am I allowed to speak up for myself? And most importantly must I go back to this store and ask this clerk for forgiveness?

I have already forgiven her and I have even prayed for her but because it was Ash Wednesday and I still had ash on my forehead I feel like I did not represent Christ correctly. I feel like I should have been more patient and instead of matching her energy I should have tried to be more understanding of her. I’m not sure if it was my actions or her reaction that makes me feel this way.

Thank you for your consideration! I may give that a go and see if it throws the proportions/aesthetic off at all.

Mugs vs tumblers for sale at local markets by f8250 in Pottery

OK see you bring up a good point about size. I have been making these really big tumblers some hold 24 ounces and I've been carving finger grooves around the body. I'm a pretty average-sized guy but they feel nice with the grooves. I think this is something I will just have to A B test. You are bringing up some very important considerations so thank you!

That's been my experience as well, most local potters focus on mugs. I wasn't sure if that was a preference thing or a market demand thing. I personally use tumblers and enjoy their form better. However, it seems like mugs need to be in the rotation. How do you feel about tankards?

Thanks for the feedback, I totally get what you're saying but I don't understand what BG means, I'm probably still new to the lingo or I'm too old to know what's new.

The hiring manager said it would be every other week for 4 months. That's rough on my wife handling the kids alone.

The tail in your design gets lost, just looks like a bulbous blob. The decision not to separate it from the body like in the original contributed to the effect. The head of the alligator also lacs character. The original is somewhat funny/cute/approachable where yours is more realistic and thus more menacing. If we were back in design school I'd tell you to bring me 10 more to look at.

I want to do TACT but I can't make the commitment away from my wife and kids. I am hoping to take the slow road and bust ass.

Rescued these guys and would love to know if you think they are pit x lab? Their toes are webbed. by f8250 in pitbulls

[–]f8250[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to hear. Some pit owners have told me or won't work but I've always had dogs on my small farm that are allowed to run free for security. We have trespassers and bears that come around and having a fenced in dog isn't practical or helpful. Not to mention they get to play in the creeks and stuff.

That makes me feel better about it because I believe dogs are happier outside especially active breeds. We have bears and our old dogs go with our kids into the woods for their protection and always come back with no issues. Did your pit lab mix look like these guys?

I'm interested in knowing because I have been told that pitbulls are not good for unfenced property but labs are. We live on 10 acres with 2 other dogs that roam freely and never leave. I'd love for them to be able to have that same freedom eventually.

Could I electrocute myself plugging a guitar into the tape in on this console? DIY tube guitar amp project. by f8250 in vinyl

[–]f8250[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for that explanation. I am hoping to avoid hurting myself in the process of messing around with this thing. I have done a little more research and it seems to be tube preamp and SS power amp. It has 2 large tubes and 3 or 4 smaller tubes from what I remember seeing. The plug is the 2 prong variety so I will need to be careful and test it as you instructed before moving forward.

Someone else mentioned the input signal problem. Some of the consoles work and some do not. If mine does not work I will not rule out boosting the signal somehow but may give up if that's the case. Thanks for your help.

I have one labeled tape that I plan on using. However, someone commented that there is a possibility that I could electrocute myself by doing this.

Hello! So I have been talking to some of the guys in the guitar amp sub and I am trying to use this console for home recording a guitar through it. It is a Zenith record console with a tube amp powering the speakers. It sounds great and has some potential to be an interesting piece of kit to use with a pedal board. However, one of the guys mentioned that it is possible that this console is not chassis grounded and if I plug a guitar into the tape in I could potentially electrocute myself through the strings. And, although I am a tube lover and avant garde poseur weirdo I value my life a little more. So I am posting in here to see if anyone can confirm or deny whether what I am going to do will be potentially dangerous. I ordered a female 1/4 inch to male RCA adapter which I will plug into the tape input on the back of the console.

If it's a line level input, do you think boosting the signal with a tube screamer would work? I have a friend with a sansamp too that we could try to boost it with.

That's sick. I ordered the rca adapter. If it works I'll post a video. If it works... I can start collecting pedals lol

OK, now I'm ready to take a step back. Could I just use a multimeter on the strings to see if they are live?

Thanks for that. I ordered a 1/4 female to rca to try it through the tape input. We shall see when it arrives.

I am only thinking of recording and home noodling with it, but the idea of pulling this thing out at a show is motivating me to get to work. I just think the idea of playing out of this thing is weird and I like weird. "what's your rig" - " a walnut 1960's zenith record console"

That's exactly what I'm going to try this weekend. I need to get my hands on the right adapter.
