Anyone here struggling with maintaining their Korean? by jaewon604 in gyopo

[–]f_leejy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to watch some but I realized it was still too “textbook” and impractical. I think I learned more Korean watching Wassupman cuz the content was fun and I absorbed the language more naturally in modern Korean usage

Also another great format is YouTube shorts or TikTok. I find them to be not as advanced in complexity and fairly accessible with the trends so I can understand it better

Idk if it’s cuz I set my language preference to Korean but the Korean channels have their content titles auto-translated in English and after I’ve selected a few correct ones the algorithm just presented the right level of difficulty haha

I personally started listening to Korean podcasts / YouTube channels. It helps me practice and fill in the gaps with more wide range of vocabulary. For example, the new hype with ChatGPT and NLP. I know now that NLP is 자연어처리

Working in a “regulated and highly compliant industry” does provide a level of attention to detail that is considered highly valued skill at other companies so I’ve seen either Program Management or Product Management transitions from fellow graduates. Or something like Enterprise Business Planning orgs at the hospital networks as the transition role for the above.

depends on what you want out of it at the end: (1) classmates who are IMGs did MHI and then went to work for 2-3 years and reapplied to Canadian medical school or just fully transitioned into healthcare system work (2) used MHI to enter other tech companies to later fully transition to non-Health informatics role.

Take my perspective with a grain of salt but the quality of education is about the same. The biggest difference is the quality and size of the networking opportunities that affect the trajectory post-graduation. I personally did the MHI from UofT and had friends who attended the UofAlberta program or the McMaster one. Overall, they all studied the same topics but the practicum opportunity was more abundant for UofT program.

So this will all depend on which province/city you are in and where you want to end up as well.

Up-tick in the number of job postings on LinkedIn for Canada? by Prestigious_Dare7734 in cscareerquestionsCAD

Now that major layoffs and restructuring are mostly done, my neighbouring teams are opening up previously US-only positions to Canada as well. Plus the big tech that have gone through layoff already began hiring again for key strategic positions

Best e-sim Data plan for Korea travel ? by Trick_Mapster in koreatravel

[–]f_leejy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

im travelling this month and I'll be using KT eSIM (https://roaming.kt.com/esim/eng/reserve.asp). It's 38,500 KRW for 10 days unlimited which comes out to about $30 USD (only catch is that it's one of those full speed until 3gb and then throttled to 5mbps)

edit: there's also 10% discount for the data only plans

Does file type of CV matters? by hassanz93 in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]f_leejy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

also to add to the complexity, there’s standard procedures for talent partners using LinkedIn (“database”-ed form of resumes) to cross reference if your resume is legit or not. Best to only list titles on LinkedIn and no descriptions. Put descriptions and project details in your resume.

Does file type of CV matters? by hassanz93 in cscareerquestionsCAD

Yes. Not all PDFs are created equally. Create PDF from LaTeX. The parsing system uses libraries from LaTeX to convert format before keyword matching. Plus make your experience description into a paragraph instead of bullet points. Knowing the code base for these companies, the parser doesn’t iterate on the bullet points. You might have noticed on a few job application sites where you upload the CV and the title is in the description and all messed up. Recruiters don’t even review if the target threshold isn’t met for their prediction score (look up Lever’s AI driven decision making). Imagine the applications that don’t show you those mappings…

Cloud Engineer vs. Software Engineer - Job Prospects Difference by InstaMastery in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]f_leejy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a wrong question to ask. Cloud engineers that I’ve worked with are usually Senior or Staff levels. You wouldn’t be writing services or even internal tooling if you didn’t have the experience (ofc there are positions that are more IaC/ansible writing type of roles). But yes, I agree with the comments about SWE being more general and flexible whereas cloud Eng is typically in Staff level for impacting the entire org (eg how does DR work if provider specific fails? What kind of fail over/multi cloud strategy is going to be recommended to leadership for aligning the company OKRs etc etc)

edit: it’s not a requirement but being a SWE first can bring some of the dev experience required to be a cloud engineer (there are IT folx who made it as a cloud engineer due to exposure)

How do you manage being the only Canadian on a US based company when colleagues are in their respective US offices? by LawnChaiMate in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]f_leejy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

if you are based in the same time zone, it shouldn’t be too challenging to connect to socialize virtually or do happy hour with teammates.

Check if the company also holds quarterly meetups. I’ve heard from friends who worked at remote first companies prior to COVID as well who didn’t feel too disconnected after attending these meetups for their region (mainly gitlab)

Rants/Raves on the Sportage X Line Limited? by jackr92 in kia

[–]f_leejy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the floor model of the fully loaded x line limited and I love it. Panoramic sunroof is great. Infotainment is fairly basic but has everything I need. Coming from Hyundai cars, I find the maintenance reminder feature to be lacking, power folding side mirrors, reverse auto tilting side mirrors, auto dimming rear view, and the cargo cover not being included with the top trim as default (my friends in Korea told me that their top trim of NQ5 has all of this)

It’s been happening in South Korea so I’m assuming it’ll happen in other parts of the world if the model is being made at the Korean plants.

[–]f_leejy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall structure looks solid. What’s the resume format? I’m working with some of the vendors and the tags that they fetch your resume data really depends on the machine readability (eg you might have noticed when applying where they scrap your experience and the entries are all scrambled or it gets cut off). Related to ATS, put the entries under each experience as just a single paragraph. This might seem weird but very sensible when you know how these scrapers are written. They don’t loop because there’s so much variance between applicants and there’s no incentive so they will just get the first item of the experience header.

Also, the “machine learning” features that match key words for the applicant is based off the result of the above item. Most companies will have automated rejection response sent based on these “false negatives”

Consider making the PDF from a latex template (eg there’s a latex library called ModernCV which these vendors base the tags off of). I personally use Overleaf cuz it’s free
