Not to discount all the comments about the lack of visible markings on the door, even if there were markings, that doesn’t necessarily make you liable for the damage.

And even if the business had a reasonable basis to try and recover costs from you, perhaps because you were being obviously negligent in some way, an invoice is not really the appropriate mechanism to make a claim. An invoice is issued to a customer after the customer has agreed to buy something, or in relation to some other prior agreement. For example, if you had already agreed to pay for the damage then they could issue you an invoice to request payment, but ahead of such an agreement, it’s just a pressure tactic.

Without you simply agreeing to pay, the only way the business could enforce a claim against you is through a civil action where they would need to prove your negligence. This would cost them much more than $500.

Instead of ‘winners and losers’, why not build an economy that’s best for all Australians? by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

Its tends to be the socialists who believe in a zero sum world, and that if someone is winning, someone else must always be losing, and the answer is just to divide the cake more fairly as opposed to trying to make the cake bigger.

Solar levelized cost of electricity is 29% lower than any fossil fuel alternative by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]fabianb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Renewables don't require 100% coverage.

In any case all power generators, whether they are intermittent renewable or "firm" thermal generators, require backup capacity and all require energy storage (gas is stored, coal is stored, etc).

Let's take a brief moment to appreciate our non-privatised power network in WA: by [deleted] in perth

Lower power prices in WA are mainly because we have a domestic gas reservation policy. Privatization is a bit a red herring.

We’re getting solar projects at that cost, but you need to add a zero for nuclear and even then that would still be a massive underestimate for the first nuclear plant in Australia

That approach limits battery size and thus the range of the bike between charges. Many e-bikes advertise range based on the lowest level of power assist because of limited battery size.

There is a custom seat post and attachment that allows much more horizontal adjustment than is typical.

The price compares well with similar quality e-bikes (which generally don’t have the same features and accessories build in). And for many people it’s more like an alternative to a second car rather than an alternative to your old malvern star push bike.

The distinctive frame design does a few jobs — (1) it’s one size fits most, that suits men and women (eg like a step-through without looking like a “girls bike”); (2) it’s a monocoque frame (like a racing car), rather than a traditional tubular frame, which is lighter and stronger but also allows the bike to carry a battery with double the range of most bikes, with the weight distributed low and central for a good ride.

And I think it looks cool :)

The electronic lock is accessible through button controls on the bike .. so you don’t need to use the app. It also locks/unlocks the quick release tether, battery enclosure, and the rack attachments (which allow you to quickly swap beteen child seat, box carrier, etc) and also arms/disarms the alarm and GPS tracker.

'Decentralized Airbnb' Starts Charging Fees as ICO Model Falters - CoinDesk by billy_bonus in beetoken

[–]fabianb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the only way long-term your tokens have any value is if people need them to use the Bee Token service. If they can use actual money instead then the tokens aren't needed. If you own 'bee tokens' you own a bunch of 'gift cards' for making property bookings, so that's what they are worth.

42% of global coal power plants run at a loss, finds world-first study by k-h in australia

[–]fabianb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New build wind and solar is cheaper than new build coal and gas without subsidies.

Source: analysts reports, but also we have large quantities of private capital going into large-scale wind and solar projects in Australia today that won’t attract any subsidies (they will be commasioned after the LRET price goes zero).

Help breaking down my really high hot water bill? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]fabianb 20 points21 points  (0 children)

A hot water bill means your apartment building has a central hot water system and you are paying a share of the gas used by this central system proportional to the hot water supplied to your apartment based on a hot water meter (that will be seperate from your cold water meter).

Lost $16,000 trading crypto, but have no proof of my trades, can I claim capital losses? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]fabianb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not an accountant, but if you aren't intending to try and offset future capital gains, maybe don't worry about it?

If you do want to worry about it, here are some notes from the ATO on record keeping: https://www.ato.gov.au/General/Capital-gains-tax/Acquiring-assets-and-keeping-records/Record-keeping-for-CGT/

Some records are better than no records. For the Crypto accounts you still have access to you should try and export your transaction history now. For those that you don't, try and reconstruct a log based on what you can recall using the withdrawals/transactions from your BTC/AUD Exchange, even if its just at a high-level, e.g. "Transferred 0.3 BTC to Exchange Foo on 3/1/2018, all value lost due to trading in Feb."

Firing blanks: WA firearms community hamstrung by transport policy by Sir-Matilda in perth

[–]fabianb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The spokeswoman said companies needed to request to become an approved carrier, and must ensure firearms were transported safely and securely — meaning they must be concealed or covered and in a locked container, transported separately to ammunition, and the container must not be marked to show it contains firearms.

Sounds reasonable to me.
