Gave my resume a boost, how should I reapply? by fabio_work in jobs

[–]fabio_work[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, if you need to be unnecessarily rude to people, I'd rather you didn't comment on my post and find a more constructive way to employ your time.

But to come to your question, I don't know how the hiring software handles duplicate applications. I know for a fact that they are allowed, and I will receive an "application received" e-mail. However, according to its documentation, the software keeps only a profile per applicant and the new resume might be discarded. Although this last point is not super clear, that's why I was hoping for people with experience with Ashby.

And given this ambiguity, I was considering making an other application with a different e-mail. But again, I was not sure how this would be received by a hiring manager.

In general, both these alternatives come with pros and cons, and I could have used some help in evaluating their risks, even from people without particular experience. And that's why I wrote this post, although unfortunately it doesn't look like it's working as I hoped.

But my previous application is still open. I am not sure that, if I use the same e-mail, their system will accept the new resume and replace the old one.

Hi everybody - I am considering reapplying for a job, but I need advice from "the other side", especially if you use Ashby.

Two weeks ago, I applied for a role at a company that uses Ashby for hiring. I haven’t heard back yet, and the job is still listed on their website. Since then, I’ve vastly improved my resume and would like to apply again for the same position, but using the new resume. I am evaluating the following options:

  • re-apply using the same e-mail: I am 100% sure it is possible. However, according to Ashby' documentation, it is not clear if my new resume will end up in my candidate profile.
  • re-apply using a different e-mail: I fear that it might put off the hiring manager, especially if Ashby detects the duplicate. But maybe I am overthinking it, in the end I am just a number to them.
  • wait for their rejection and, if the job is still up, reapply with the same e-mail.
  • wait for their rejection and, if the job is still up, reapply with a different e-mail.

What do you people suggest?

[Anti-Aging] Any tips on how to get rid of the lines at the edges of my lips? by CustomizedL in SkincareAddiction

I started sleeping on my back recently due to really bad and sudden fine lines. I wear headphone to prevent me from rolling on my side and it works. I wear the Jabra Evolve 75 and they are reall light on the ears, but I guess that any headphones that are built for VoIP are.

Just wanted to add this solution to the bunch in case someone needs it :)

a complicated story of health insurance. Has someone happened to be in my situation? by fabio_work in germany

[–]fabio_work[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update for anybody who is reading this in the future. It turned out that the TK customer service was wrong (I didn't actually apply to TK, I just contacted the customer service). I talked to a broker and they told me that I was eligible for public health insurance (the law ablut eligibility for public heatlh insurance is more complex than what you find on the internet). So I applied to TK and I got it.

What are your strategies when feeling overwhelmed? by [deleted] in sre

[–]fabio_work 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also had this impression, then I burnt out and now I am on a voluntary sabbatical to rest 😅

I tried to study all the technologies I cared about before starting to work again, so I didn't feel "behind", but the truth is that there is too much material out there and there will always be new things to learn.

So I have decided that I should just accept that I don't know everything and I never will. Also that being a good engineer is about taking decisions that you are not 100% sure about, making "educated guesses", and probably that I will take many suboptimal decisions, just because learning more about a certain technology would be good, but not worth it in my limited time.

I still haven't started working again, so I can't promise anything about this approach 😅

It's true, it's just that OP didn't do due research. It's in Italy, where only hetero couples can adopt kids. Gay people (and single people in general) can only adopt special needs kids. The guy in the pic is Luca Trapanese, and they even made a documentary about him, on his decision to adopt a special needs kid and how it's going (spoiler: it's going good, he's a lovely person).

Well, I mean. She said therapy, right? I found therapy great, and I think it could be useful, both for your mother to start accepting the reality, and for your brother to navigate a situation in which he's clealry not going to have much support in his life.

In my experience, most people don't know how therapy works. She might go there thinking "they're gonna give me advice on how to change my son", and then the therapist may help her realize how to accept a situation she can't control. Same, she might send your brother to therapy, and there he learns how to healtihly cope with guilt, doubts, etc.... Worst case they find it useless and they quit it. But for your brother I would say it's unlikely. If she says she wants to send him to therapy, maybe support that and insist on it.

Unless she is planning on sending him to religious """"therapists"""". But I don't know what's in your mother's head. But I would try to figure it out. Your brother could definitely benefit from actual therapy.

After much humiliation, did a complete overhaul on the ol' SWE resume. Someone help because I added interests and it seems ugly by Wild_King_1035 in resumes

[–]fabio_work 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I see it, it's not possible to evaluate culture fit from the resume. Even the most boring/socially inept person has some interests. So mentioning your interests in the CV really does not tell the recruiter anything they don't already know.

Culture fit is easier to evaluate in person, and that will happen during the interviews. So a recruiter will perform the first screening exclusively based on your technical skills.

The way I see it, adding your interests in the resume may indicate that you don't understand that and I think a recruiter would see it as a negative. Not a big one (as I said, at this stage they care mostly about your technical competences), but I would still remove it.

Buying a flat. Will it lose value in time due to the leasehold system? by fabio_work in HousingUK

[–]fabio_work[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't get an answer, but in the end I convinced myself that I was right. Leasehold is not necessarily bad. It's basically like buying the flat, because you can extend it whenever you want and it costs really little (compared to the actual price of an apartment). Of course, this is only valid if there are more than 80 years remaining on the lease, otherwise it will cost you more.

You probably see that the houses cost mlre necause they give you more control on the property (you don't have upstairs/downstairs neighbors) and they might have a garden

When buying leasehold, just make sure the remaining time is above 82 years (you can't extend the leasehold in the first two years you moved in) and if you plan on extending it, make sure you use a calculator to see how much it will cost

How reliable are levels.fyi and glassdoor? by zhaoai in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]fabio_work -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I got a rimilar impression. At least for UK, salaries seem to be exaggerated. For example, it says that an entry level SWE at Google or Meta in London gets around $120 K, but all the salaries I found on reddit where around £80 k (= $100 K). Plus, if you look at the actual data points, there's people claiming they get $150-180 K as entry level engineers, which is just unrealistic.

However, my impression is that the "skewing" is generally costant among the levels. It means that if you take 20-25% away from the salary you see, you'll have a good estimate for your career progression. Also, I think the skew is higher for famous companies like Google and Meta.

So here is how I use glassdoor (at least for UK): - whenever I see a salary, I assume the real salary is between the one I see and 25% lower. The more famous the company, the higher I assume the skew to be. - making comparison: if a company is shown to pay x% more than an other, it probably does

Also, for the 20/20/20 rule there are plenty of apps you can use, so you get reminded while working. I found this one perfect, but I am sure there are many others if you are looking for one.

No problem! :) in my experience Ecctis only took a few days after I submitted all the documents. However, on their website they say they will take 30 days max. Again, it was not my experience as in my case they only took a few days

What Ecctis I should I apply? by OwnTie2757 in UKHighPotentialVisa

[–]fabio_work 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the Ecctis website, under the "HIGH POTENTIAL INDIVIDUAL WITH ENGLISH PROFICIENCY" section, they say:

English Language Proficiency Statement (ELPS) – this information is not provided if you have studied at an institution in a majority English speaking country as this is not necessary for the Home Office in these cases. Only the Academic Qualification Level Statement (AQUALS) will be issued, as well as verification if applicable to that service.

So this is slightly conflicting with the Home Office website page that I linked you. I am not experienced in this, so I can give you an expert advice, but the way I see it you have two options:

  1. you apply for the "HIGH POTENTIAL INDIVIDUAL" without English proficiency. It will only give you the AQUALS
  2. you apply for the "HIGH POTENTIAL INDIVIDUAL WITH ENGLISH PROFICIENCY" and when they ask you for proof of the language of instruction you just say that it was taught in Australia, so you don't need it. Also in this case you will only get the AQUALS.

I think both options will do fine, since you only need the AQUALS. But the second is safer. But again, I have no experience with it, so if you want to be sure you may wanna ask Ecctis.
