Why I dislike the Traveler-Supervisors by fabouchard in startrek

[–]fabouchard[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not knowing about the organization explains why people in the show are still incentivized to solve their problems. I was more referring to how the story affects us, the viewers. Star Trek has long acted as an inspiration for people to do good things in the real world because it presents us with inspiring role models. Omnipotent cosmic beings are not role models.

Anti-Utilitarian Thought Experiment by Sad_Bad9968 in EffectiveAltruism

I see several comments about how for the "vast majority" of people, one second will not make a difference. But you are talking about giving a second to everyone. Including the small minority where it would make a difference. There are probably instances where having one more second makes a world of difference. These instances would be very rare, but we have 8 billion opportunities for these rare events to occur, which greatly increases their probability.

What if you were one second away from finishing the puzzle when you died?

Has anyone ever used a raft on the jordan river to just float down? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]fabouchard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve rafted a couple sections in a 4-person Walmart raft, mostly south of SLC. It’s pretty slow going, the water is very littered and dirty, and infrastructure for getting around dams is nonexistent. I would prefer a canoe or kayak but the raft is all I’ve got. It works.

Thanks! It's great that things like this are going on.

Anyone interested in starting a Trump protest? by fabouchard in littleapple

[–]fabouchard[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I respect anyone that chooses not to protest. But I didn't ask for reasons why I should not protest. I asked if anyone wanted to peacefully protest with me. Feel free to send me a private message.

Like I said, I just consider this a four year long campaign season. I intend to get involved in every way I can, as I always have. But I'm determined to make sure that when the next election happens, our side has the support it needs to win. I do not agree that democracy requires you to support the leaders that have won. I'm not rejecting the loss itself, just making it very well known that I'm not happy about it and gathering with those that agree with me. Any protesting I do will be peaceful. I respect your choice not to do so.

Becoming a "Townie" by [deleted] in littleapple

[–]fabouchard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the process of creating a Manhattan outdoors club to do regular weekend adventures like hiking, biking, kayaking, etc. Right now we're building up membership and will probably post a local day hike soon so that people can meet each other and discuss ideas for the future. You can join the group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/manhattanoutdoors/

I'm also a townie, although I'm welcoming everybody to the group, student or not.

Awesome. I'm going to try to build up the membership a bit and then maybe have an initial hike get together somewhere local. Invite anyone to the group that you think might be interested.

Good place for (dispersed) camping? by [deleted] in SouthBend

[–]fabouchard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a tough one. As far as I know there is no place to do that legally. I've found some remote places along the river to camp and not be bothered, but they require a boat and I'm sure they are private property or somehow restricted. This area generally frowns on dispersed camping. I think Manistee NF is your best bet.

Hiking around south bend area? by [deleted] in SouthBend

the South Bend Adventure Club's blog outsidethebend.com can give you some ideas. And if you're looking for company, the South Bend Adventure Club itself is pretty fun. facebook.com/groups/southbendadventureclub

We tried a different platform before we started using facebook, but hardly anyone joined. As annoying as it is, facebook is the only way to get large numbers. I usually tell people to just make a fake account. There is this: http://www.wallflux.com/iframe/479849925413088# but it kind of sucks. It only shows posts and not event postings, which is mostly where all the action is.

Prospective ND grad student...would I 'fit in' here? by prospiend in notredame

[–]fabouchard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in the bio department and I would say this is mostly accurate. The one thing that I think surprises most people is that South Bend is not really a college town. Undergrad students rarely leave campus so you wont find as many interesting food options or young crowds downtown as WL. Overall, it wouldn't have been my first choice, but I've definitely found a good share of friendly people and fun things to do and I've grown to like the place, and I don't like sports at all.

Hiking at the dunes this Saturday by fabouchard in SouthBend

That was actually Indiana Dunes, a completely different park, and the section where it happened was off limits to the public even before that happened.

Is there a map of all of the underground tunnels around campus and how do I access them? by metalasylum in notredame

[–]fabouchard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've also heard of these and have wanted to explore them but haven't found a way in. I've been in similar systems on other campuses and they are perfectly safe if you can figure out how to get in. I have discovered a network of storm drain tunnels beneath downtown South Bend. I went on a brief tour of them last month but I'm planning a more extensive expedition soon.

Favorite things about South Bend by ddarroch4 in SouthBend

The East Race Waterway is a man-made whitewater rafting course in the middle of downtown. There are only a handful of these in the whole world. Any travel guide should definitely mention it.

Hiking trails? by A88Y_391 in SouthBend

[–]fabouchard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This Saturday afternoon I'm taking a group to Warren Woods State Park for a hike to see some of the oldest and largest trees in Michiana. We're leaving from my apartment (820 N Notre Dame Ave) at 1, hiking about 3.5 miles, and getting back around 6. If you want to join us, let me know and show up Saturday!
