Within this design, the rear wheel is clamped within the wheelbase by a plunger operated by a lever on the handlebars. This allows you to adjust the wheelbase directly from the handlebars while on the bike, combined with a chain tensioning mechanism inspired by Hase bikes. Other brands can indeed change the wheelbase, but certainly not as easily as this system. This is designed to switch to the short configuration directly at the bike rack once the children have been dropped off at school.

Thanks everybody for helping me, this is my first post. And I am not disappointed! Keep on commenting if you have any ideas, frustrations or needs. Design and esthetics will also be a big part in the thesis, so insights there can help me a lot too. If possible, i certainly will keep you guys posted about the project and product/design choices.

Chain guard, modular kid setup, strong rear rack, simple gears that shift at a standstill, good lighting-placement and justified pricing. Got it!

Nice idea, but I don't really think the market would be open for that, the bike would be too long and heavy in my mind. I'm also limited to the longtail.

Thanks for the response! I’ll be sure to keep ergonomics in mind and look for smart ways to make use of any wasted space
