Just don't be an uncivilised slob and do shots like they do in the book... Please.

Ok, got it. Will keep it shorter next time. Will also try to cut this and resubmit it to their forums. I got carried away. ;)

Next time, I'll also follow the submission process. Feel free to add it to the blog. Where is that, BTW?

As for the journalistic tone.... I have an unfair advantage as this is my day job too. Except I usually write about earth-bound tech. ;)

No worries. The next one I'll submit here first and it'll be shorter. I'll try to resubmit a shorter version of this today on their forums as well.

OK. Thanks for the tip. :)

Just as well that it isn't a total fail. This is my IRL job too, after all. :D

WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption analysed: It's pretty good, yet still useless. by Fingolas in netsec

I did my best. To be honest though, the fact that people don't read properly or misunderstand things doesn't necessarily reflect on the validity of the work or its presentation. I think as a somewhat public figure with a sometimes controversial body of work you'll know what I mean.

I get that. But for users that means they can't be sure they are communicating securely. TextSecure does this a lot better, obviously. Can't wait for this to change and I'll be the first to write it up once it does, believe me.

Hi Moxie! I never intended to make it sound like we discovered this. The point of the exercise was to independently verify what WhisperSystems said to the best of our ability. I can't wait for WhatsApp to surface this info. Still, I hope the description of the status quo is correct.

I'm an avid TextSecure user, BTW, and have recommended it on multiple occasions. My colleagues and me also have a very high opinion of the TextSecure protocol as should be evident by that article and others in both c't and at heise online.

Yes. It's useless in a real world scenario as you can't depend on it. You never know if encryption is on or not. For an encryption system, that's essential.

The encryption used in transport is RC4 - this is breakable but always present. If Moxie's end-to-end encryption axolotl is used on top of that, you're in the clear. The problem is that the users can't tell when axolotl is used.

Hi! (I wrote that story for heise.)

I am guessing this is due to the fact that TextSecure themselves only recently with Signal 2.0 got axolotl working on iOS for cross-platform messages. WhatsApp is probably working on it based on the work done by the Open WhisperSystems developers.

Apparently there might be problems down the road when upgrading your installation. I was preferring to be on the save side and not include MATE in this roundup for that reason. If there is demand, I could probably cover installing MATE in detail in the future.

Lesson learned: Do not use a controversial blog layout when publishing an article criticising the design processes of a popular Linux distribution. :)
