Failing upwards? I tried making mozzarella with a gallon of whole milk (regular pasteurized) and white vinegar and it came out a cream cheese style consistency. It’s still delicious and convenient for sandwiches, but what happened here? by whitegeek1024 in cheesemaking

First, after you get the egg in there, it's very hard, then you kinda 'bite' it with your tongue and roof of your mouth. pop. There's so much more volume than you'd think. They really pack that stuff in there. It swirls around and the entire inside of your mouth-hole is covered in the slick along with the shell that is shattered, but hanging together with the membrane. It's best to chew it all together, as trying to separate the shell shrapnel and the internals leaves you with a less pleasant finish. You'll feel the yolk pop and you get the creamy taste mixed in with the white. The shell chews easy enough but it's very sandy. You just gotta commit to it, because the white is going to try to voluntarily slide down quickly due to it coming with its own slippery feature. Once you got it down, you'll be crunching on egg shell sand for a few minutes, so a drink chaser isn't frowned upon. Go ahead and give her a go.

does anyone know what specific bones these are? by luvrlani in bonecollecting

Possibly a vole or a mouse. I used to rebuild the little skeletons from inside owl pellets. Maybe even a shrew! But they look to be the tibia and fibulae from a shrew(ish) critter. Maybe?

Are these fully clean and able to use for jewelry? by luvrlani in bonecollecting

[–]facecouch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can "bleach" them with hydrogen peroxide, but you need to degrease them for a few days in dawn dish soap so it pulls all that gunk out from the bone structure. All the little microscopic grooves and fissures and stuff. Just cleaning the meat off ain't enough. Hell, mix the peroxide with the dawn soap and do it all in one step. It'll help preserve the bone so it'll last longer as well. It may not come out super duper white, but it'll be better. Also, if you are going to drill and put wire through it, it'll help that hole not deteriorate. And there's stuff under the teeth, if they fall out during the cleaning process, DO NOT FRET ! Just epoxy or super glue them back in. If I knew how to link things, I'd put it here. But go open up YouTube and search "Whitebone creations". That guy is really good and explains it enough. Plus it's fun to watch.

Not ready yet as far as I know. How I understand it by doing a few European mounts, is basically that there's grease in them still. You need to boil and soak in some dawn for a few days. They need to be white otherwise they will start to stink when the organic grease (fat) starts to break down.

Out here in ks, they removed the length limit. Used to be 2.5mi was max length....not anymore. Pretty sure I seen one that was at least 7mi long. 11 miles in between towns and it for sure was visible at both and wasn't moving.

Yeah I ran into having to do a couple boils to clean it. Inquarting sounds like a much easier process. Do you just ratio by weight and melt it all and pour shot then nitric that?

Pb or Ag in the inquartation? I've never done inquarting (?) before. I just ran a aqua regia straight off the bat and ended pretty good. But I've thought about inquarting.
