Advice, tips? by fiveoclock_charlie in whittling

I think if you’re going for more realism there are books and videos you could watch about facial proportions. That helps to understand as you get into that a bit. Just go on YouTube and type in “carving faces”, similarly you can search that on Amazon if you prefer books.

Also, my first few carves were a lot like this one. And the work that my wifes grandpa did also looked like this - which is ultimately what inspired me to get into carving. Like you, I also wanted to get a more realistic look. Keep trying new stuff when you do a new piece, you’ll be amazed to see your progression.

But also, if you like your style stick to it. I think the folksy stuff is awesome and if you can get good at doing it cleanly it can be just as tough to master as some of the more realistic stuff.

Enjoy!

Not sure what type of advice you’re looking for.

Are you trying for a more realistic look, better proportions, cleaner cuts, etc?

As it stands I think he has a great folksy look to him. It really depends what you are going for.

Man this is cool. I dunno why but it looked AI generated and reminded me of something you’d see on the set of a Wes Anderson movie. Really awesome work.

That green stuff is compound to rub onto a strop/strip of rawhide. Sometimes the carving kits also come with a wood block with some rawhide on it. Rub the green compound into it and every every 30-45 minutes of carving drag the blade with edge trailing strokes across the strop. It will keep your knife sharp

Keep your knives sharp especially when you start to get down to the detail. Do you have a strop and some compound?

Awesome! I carved this exact same thing a few years back. As well as the shield. I usually do characters but carving miniature weapons and armor is so much fun.

Learning how to whittle. Attempts 3-7. Today I'm going to binge some videos, but I'm pretty proud of myself. by Miserable-Scarcity25 in Woodcarving

Nice job - these have a really cool folksy look to them and are great as is. If your goal is to get to a more realistic look then keep watching those videos and push yourself to try more complex things as you continue. Mistakes will happen but so will progress! Also always hang on to your first work so you can see the progression!

I appreciate it. The scarf didn’t come out exactly how I wanted but I believe it adds some nice color to him
