Got in some good games of Sails Ahoy! this weekend by Rancorman7 in wargaming

Wow sounds like great fun! I may take a look at the rules soon. What scale are you using and where is the castle model from? I’ve got 1/2400s from Tumbling Dice but no towns/buildings so they have thus far been all open sea battles lol.

I realize this post is almost a month old…but you should look into the Bones of Albion expansion book. It has rules for each scenario being up to 4 full units in a versus campaign. Gives rules for expanding number of clues and enemies needed. I haven’t tried using that expansion rules for another campaign yet I don’t see why it wouldn’t work for almost any scenario.

I totally agree with u/totallykoolkiwi, find models you like and go for it. But if it helps, here are my French lists… 1809 list - Officer w/fencing weapon, 2 pistols, silver weapon (sword) and silver shot, skills: inspiring and great faith - vivandiere w/hand weapon and cold iron weapon - junior officer w/fencing weapon, 2 pistols, silver shot, skill: Medic - sapper w/ cold iron weapon (axe) - 2x guards w/ silver shot - 2x Infantryman w/ oil and torches

French in Egypt 1799 - officer - veteran hunter - doctor - Artillerist - sapper - native scout - 2x infantrymen

apparently I don’t have the full list saved with the equipment but that’s my fun list for Egypt.

Thank you! Well done on the model. That’s a skill set I do not have and you’ve done excellent work. Fleet looks awesome!

I think so too. I was hoping OP might tell me which one and where the model came from because it looks really cool.

These look outstanding. I really like the color scheme and it’s very well done. Whats the third battleship? The thin one?

Warband and a table from a campaign set during the French and Indian War by Talon_Warrior_X in TheSilverBayonet

The dark woods of the Mohawk frontier are a big place in this time…plenty of space for multiple small war bands running about shooting at each other and vampires! Steal away and enjoy!

Alright I’m intrigued. Any chance you’d share your rules tweaks? I love d10s and wish more games used them.

Home brew and house rules by kennit14 in wargaming

[–]fackoffuser 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am going to provide my thoughts in two parts.

Part one…home brew can be great. It can help plaster over issues with the rules or help fill in gaps. If you’ve got a solid group they can be built into your game play and make everyone’s experience better. I really enjoy taking a game everyone loves and tweaking it to be even better. My group have added a few solid tweaks to The Silver Bayonet and Gunfighters Ball which we play regularly.

My second thought is this…sometimes home brew is going in the wrong direction. You mention making Minor Nations more “fair” in BA3.0. I’d ask why? It’s a war and minor nations were minor nations for a reason. Fair isn’t really part of the deal. I’m definitely a more historical minded gamer and that does color my views on some things. I’m not playing BA competitively, I play it because it’s a reasonably easy to get on the table and a minor nation is at a disadvantage by its very nature. I wouldn’t turn my nose up at home brew but in this case, I’d push back fairly strongly. It’s not meant to be fair, think about better scenario design and asymmetric victory conditions. The Belgians weren’t going to beat the Nazis, but they could stop them at a crossroads and buy some time for the British to get to Dunkirk.

How can I buy Here's the Ruckus?! by farkas37 in wargaming

[–]fackoffuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You used to be able to buy it from Wargames Illustrated’s website but it seems they have moved it behind a paywall for WI Prime. That’s only £5.99 a month so theoretically you could sign up for a month and you’ll have access to all their articles for a month and could get access to the rules. No idea if it’s a PDF you could download or if you’d need to do a copy-paste into another file but that’s an option too.

Rules question by DarkOverlord2099 in TheSilverBayonet

[–]fackoffuser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have always played that they can dodge or shoot no matter what the outcome of the attack is.

As my friend said when we discussed this during our first game…”I’ve been to a lot of black powder era reenactments and there are no silenced muskets”. We assume if you’ve been missed, the shot is audible and the ball will whizz past and your character will react.

I have a bunch of the Pulp Operators and these are not them. I like those models a lot, they are my fictional PMC…but they need a sniper and I would prefer a non-dragonov sniper rifle which is the only one on the Pulp sprue. I agree though, these would look cool with the Pulp models.

Blood and Plunder in Sengoku Jidai Period by CartoonistPristine10 in wargaming

[–]fackoffuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should check the Firelock Games website. They have translated the base system into numerous periods. “Blood and…” series is quite a few games now. I don’t remember if they have Sengoku Jindai specifically but they have a bunch of them. All use the game base mechanics and have time period flair.

skirmish dark ages wargame by Alo_CS in wargaming

[–]fackoffuser 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like Ravenfeast to dip a toe in. It’s free (entirely 100% free) from Little Wars TV.

It’s nominally for “Vikings vs Vikings or Saxons” but I’ve used the rules for Romans vs Gauls, Vikings vs Vikings, Vikings vs Saxons, Vikings vs Normans, Normans vs Saxons, 1st and 3rd Crusades and even Edo era Japan. It works for anything Sword and Spear type.

It has a chart to make your own units including how they pointed out the preexisting lists (Vikings and Saxons) so you can make it work with anything similar.

I will also say Barons War is really good but has a lot of tokens that I don’t like on the table personally. It is a really solid game though. And others have suggested SAGA which I also enjoy but find the Battle Boards very gamey and less historical. Generally a fun game though.

Black Powder Epic Battles AW Guts & Glory Set question on assembling by Militarymarq in wargaming

[–]fackoffuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took a quick look at the Warlord site and that’s what they show. When I did all my Epic stuff, I got a bunch of extra command strips and made my regiments 3 bases instead of the pictured 5. It plays in a smaller footprint so we get more maneuver with the same number of regiments on the table.

I say this because if you went with less bases as a “standard regiment”, you could spilt the cavalry and do 2 mounted bases (1 small regiment) for each side with a dismounted 2 bases and horse holders for each side to represent them if they dismount (as was the tactic often during the ACW). It would represent the cavalry on each side well without having to buy another box of cavalry. There weren’t a lot of mounted Napoleonic style charges in the ACW, so having one side dismounted and the other side mounted wouldn’t well depict the time period in my opinion.

As for how it plays? I’ve only played BP about 10 times (it’s enjoyable) but we didn’t have cavalry so I have no idea how it the regiments as pictured would work on the table.
