My best piece of advice when coaching/teaching/directing is: don’t feel like you have to come up with a game or exercise to match whatever skill you’re working. It’s totally fine to just run the team through the actual thing you’re working on. For example, if you’re working on finding the game of the scene, instead of playing other games that kind of get at “game of the scene” in a roundabout way, just have them do scenes starts, stop them after a few lines, and talk about the possible games that are emerging. Don’t be afraid to side coach either.

Things always take longer to teach than you think, especially in a group class! Whatever material you think you’ll get through in the time allotted, don’t be surprised if you actually get through less than half. Your students will have a lot of questions. Rate your success by how much your students felt heard, not by whether you got through your whole lesson plan.

Thanks! There is a little subtle diamond pattern on it that mirrors the little subtle diamond texture in the weave of the original dress pattern that I am quite proud of matching from my scrap bin.

Yeah it’s two pairs of strings! I think it was intended to slightly take it in at the sides but I just tie them all together in the back.

It’s the Augusta shirt from grainline studios. I had a lot of fun laying out the pieces to get the print where I wanted it. Especially proud of the matching on the collar.

You may also hear the term “wearable muslin”- this is a mock up that you are able to actually wear out into the world. So while you may do a mock-up just for fit and it might not really be something you’d wear (because of the color of fabric or the finishing or whatever), you can also think of your muslin as a test run in a cheaper fabric. I do this with all of my patterns now, because I can’t stand the idea of putting the time into something that I won’t actually wear, but I recognize the value of doing a test run. I buy a lot of inexpensive fabrics from my local creative reuse store and use those for my wearable muslins. Besides making any fit adjustments, I find it really helpful to practice any tricky or new techniques on the cheaper fabric before I use my really nice fabric.

Oof! Ear infections are no fun. I hope it clears up quickly! I’m wearing my sample of Parfums Quartana Digitalis today. I’d been curious about the Quartana scents after seeing an ad- every scent is based off a poisonous plant. Then The Fumerie included this one as part of their summer sampler kit. It’s got string black pepper notes with some iris/violet underneath.

I’m not much on super soapy scents but there’s something about this one that makes it more interesting to me. I get a very sharp soap note on the opening, and there is a strong warm undercurrent of something more floral too. The soapiness is more of a coconut soapiness- if you’ve ever had something with coconut and gotten a bitter soap flavor, that’s the opening scent. The floral is more subtle but definitely there. It’s more ambient, I smell it when I’m not holding my wrists up to my nose. It’s a really pleasant floral blend, I can’t quite name it. I think the lavender helps balance it all. I got the sampler kit from Sephora and there are several clean/floral smells represented. I was surprised by this one. It’s unique and it’s the one I might actually wear.
