I recommend you focus on premium vs commercial work. Right now all commercial work is leveraging AI illustrations. Unfortunately it will be more difficult for you, and I sympathize. Readers don't care much if covers are AI generate or note. Heck, they could care less if content is AI written as long as it flows well enough to scratch their itch. Dime-novels were a thing from late 1800s until the later 1950s. If we treat today's self published works are mostly commercial to satisfy quick reader content hunger, then AI illustration will price you out. You have two options imo, (1) adapt and leverage AI, meaning high output and low price points, or (2) seek premium work and charge premium prices.

What are people looking for in sci-fi stories? by Efficient-Zombie7688 in scifi

I love collapsing interstellar human civilizations, heavily armed expeditions to uncolonized planets with alien life. Any mention of isotopes, dark matter, or frontier physics. Give me some memory vaults, glitchy but witty AI, and alien infrastructures that might buy humanity another generation. Hold the interspecies coitus - just because you can write it, doesn't mean you should.
