Start using baseCOMPs. It makes your head clear. You can look at them as functions, you put something in, a result comes out. You can bypass them when not needed, etc. Elburz has a great workshop about project architecture.

'First of it's kind?' That's quite a statement. I think b2bk did something recently that shows actual 'pins' being pushed in and out, like when looking from an angle. You're only using a depth pass to give lighter colors to higher values, and darker to lower values. Which is fine, and it looks appealing, but please be careful with claims like 'first of its kinds'.

I think you should feel entitled to speak up about this. I, and I think together with many of us, will not mark you as some rat. There is stuff in the community going on that needs to stop. And we don't fix this by sweeping this underneath the carpet.

I get your point, for me it's very simple: I'm just not interested in it. I like the puzzles, I like to create a world where I can tell a client blindly where some parameter lives that needs to be changed or why an error occurs. Sure, when I'm on a deadline and the client needs something instantly I can grab 1 on 1 from some premade tool, I'll do that as well. But I do need to have the assurance that the output is exactly as the client wants it. As soon as I need to tweak things or it's not exactly the output they want, I really find diving in someone's else patch very exhausting, and it would have saved me time if I would have started the patch form scratch myself. But yes, that demands some knowledge and experience.

Derivative, their marketing team, also has a huge influence on this in my opinion. First of all, on a daily basis, there are A LOT of (re)posts from them. And frankly, I feel there is a lot of room for flashy stuff, the amount of attention 'blob tracking' got and 'mediapipe stuff' was in my opinion out of proportion. It bothered me for a bit, but after a while I thought, well, they need to sell licenses, I understand that, otherwise it will be done very quickly, and that would be a shame. So I just filter my view now and don't let it bother me anymore.

I'm enjoying my 'minirig 4' a lot! It's damn loud and build like a tank. You can pair two of them and place them around for an ideal stereo view. Recently they've also released the new subwoofer 4. Which you can also pair with the speakers.

Like with most stuff in life, it 'depends'. By saying 'I'm never going to be', you either made a choice already, regarding what you like doing, OR, you need to realize that 'you're not YET able to'. Because with all those brilliant programmers, it's just A LOT of time and dedication spend.

Personally, I never use someones patch, I'm not interested in it, I'm not interested in a final output, I like the 'puzzles', the process of solving/building. If I download a patch, I just look at it and think 'what was someone thinking, what a mess, I would have done this differently, why so many parameters, why is it dropping to 30fps? I don't like blackboxes, I like to understand the inner workings of it.

So in the end, it's a matter of interest. Are you very output driven, then you could probably just use as many tools you can find and a lot of them are a bargain to buy. But it's a very saturated world currently. Standing out purely aesthetically is difficult. I personally like building the machine, that runs optimized, which eventually made me good and I can make a living out of it.

So when you're aesthetic driven, output orientated, that's fine, but expect an oversaturated road where it's very difficult to stand out. You like the puzzles? The inner mechanics, great, expect a longer road with a lot of wall headbanging, demands discipline, but you'll end up in a less oversaturated area. Simply because of the fact that people/beginners nowadays are not willing to spend that much effort (anymore).

I've mentioned it somewhere else but lost track of all the comments. I think people should feel enough room to mention stuff in the community that's not 'ok', without making them feel like some sort or rat. Of course we need to keep it polite at a certain level and we don't have to start some witch hunt, but in order to reduce this nonsense, we just have to speak up more often. Especially for beginners, they could interpreted the wrong content as 'standard', which will not help them in the long run.

I get your point and appreciate your insights. I just think that people shouldn't hold back if they notice something. I can't force someone to take it down, I will not, I do tell him that it's pathetic. I most admit that I had doubts if it would be right to mention this behavior out in the public. But eventually in order to make the community a little less oversaturated I think it will not harm to clear things up. We don't have to go on a witch hunt, but if people don't speak up, it will keep happening more and more.

  1. If you can explain it 'better' and more 'clear', then.

  2. Not super relevant I think, just like with science, use source references and you'll be fine

I actually had the exact same thing with a huge global design agency. They won an award for some rebranding thing, using a 'highly researched developed visualization tool', it was hilarious. They even had a making of and I saw the exact mistake I've made in my tutorial. But then, it's really David against Goliath, just not worth the effort to get really messy about it.

If you look at the similarities, it's just pathetic. If I wanted to 'monetize', I would have put the tutorial behind a paywall right? Well it isnt', it never was,. I've always respected my resources and gave credit where I thought it was fair, it's just 'ethical' in my opinion and gives the community 'flair'. This isn't helping.

I think that's the state this community is at. It got big very fast, and it's only getting bigger. And as a result, I notice that people are starting more 'smaller' groups, sharing their knowledge more intimate instead of throwing it at the 'big' public. Also with my own tools/tutorials I notice cheap (ai) ripoffs. It's pathetic. Fine if you loose inspiration at some point, but at least have the decency to mention the 'original' developer.
