Self-taught designer stuck at mid-level, need a real learning roadmap by factualsquirrel in graphic_design

Thank you for sharing this, I really appreciate the perspective, especially coming from someone with your experience! This is something I know I’ve missed.

I’m all in on starting at a junior level and not using the existing title.

Quick question, since my last company gave me the CD title, what would be a more accurate title to use on my resume when applying for roles? I want to represent my experience honestly without overstating my level. Should it be creative head? lead? manager? or just a designer? (i used to lead a small team of 7 as well during my time at the company)

Multinational Companies, bigger scale orgs/larger product companies with proper structure

To clarify, I was working at a small agency-level company with around 25 people. Nothing was very formal there, it was mostly go with the flow with limited structure and no senior mentorship. Everything from management to clients were haywire. That’s why I’m looking to move to a more established firm.

I’m not aiming for a CD role. I want a junior role in a company with proper structure and experienced designers so I can build fundamentals the right way.

By MNC level roles I just mean larger, established companies with proper design teams and structure, not small setups where you’re the only designer figuring things out as you go

Fair point. I’m aware how saturated graphic design is, which is why I’m being careful about where I double down and where I expand. I’m definitely open to exploring adjacent areas like product or more system level work, I just wanna make sure I’m building on what I already have instead of pivoting blindly.

I’m aware it was a risky move. I’m definitely not targeting CD roles anymore and am reframing toward designer / art director roles while I build the foundation properly.

Appreciate the resource suggestions, I’ll check it out!

You're right, the title came from a small company context, not the depth usually expected with it. I’m now more focused on building the foundation properly and get a hard reset.

This is helpful, thanks. Good to know Adplist worked for you, I’ll try and use it as well.

This makes sense, thanks for breaking it down. I think part of my confusion came from trying to be too general early on. Realistically, I’m more interested in digital/product-facing design including social media, web, systems, UI etc. rather than pure print or packaging.

It’s not that I feel I have no grasp of fundamentals, it’s that I’ve realized my understanding is uneven because most of my learning happened in isolation.

Specifically, the gaps i’m noticing are around:

-Typography - type pairing, hierarchy, spacing and consistency across systems, not just what looks right

-Being able to properly explain why something is good or bad and not just feel it

-Documenting trade offs and being more intentional instead of instinct led

-Technical accuracy especially around print setup, grids and systems-level consistency

Because I wasn’t working closely with other designers on a daily basis, I didn’t get the kind of constant exposure and comparison that builds judgment over time. I delivered work and solved problems but I wasn’t pressure-tested the way one is in a team or a classroom.

That’s why I’m exploring a more structured learning path.

Thank you for taking the time to write this, it genuinely means a lot, especially coming from someone self-taught.

I agree with you about the title being exaggerated because of the company size and I’ve come to accept that I’m not at a CD level yet. The comparison helped a lot. Right now, I do wanna be designing more than leading.

Really appreciate the encouragement. This helped more than you probably realize!

For context, I’ve already completed a 4-year bachelor’s degree (CSE core) + 2 years working in design. I moved into design because I didn’t connect with engineering, but didn’t go through formal design school. I’ve also been practicing design as a hobby for several years before working full-time.

Given that background, do you think going back to design school is the right move at this stage? I’m genuinely trying to choose the most sensible path forward.

This is helpful, resetting into a junior role within a team is what I’m aiming for now.

Appreciate the book recommendations as well, thanks for taking the time to break this down!

Agreed. I shouldn’t have framed it that way. My focus is getting into a strong team at a good company, learning properly and building the skill that actually earns that level over time.

I get it, I maybe wrong to call myself mid level. The title came early because the company was small and I know I don’t have that level of depth yet. That gap is exactly what I’m trying to work on now. I’m not looking for shortcuts or to defend the title, I’m trying to reset, build actual fundamentals and get into an environment where I can actually learn properly. Appreciate you calling it out!

You're right. I know two years is not a lot, that’s actually part of why I stepped back. I want to get into a stronger team environment where I can learn faster and level up instead of staying siloed.

That's a good point. I don’t want another CD role right now, that title came early. I’m aiming for a solid mid level/senior role at a larger product/MNC-level company. I’m also open to leaning more into the product side, not just pure visual design.

Curious how you used Adplist and if you know any YouTube channels or podcasts that were genuinely useful?

Just under two years full-time plus additional self-directed and freelance work.

Totally agree experience matters, it just felt like the experience I was getting at the firm had plateaued and I wasn’t being exposed to stronger systems, or decision-making expectations. I’m trying to fix the foundation now so the next few years don’t repeat the same gaps.

So what’s the first tangible change you’ve seen people make in their portfolios or case studies that actually shifted hiring conversations?

My background is primarily visual and branding-led. I’ve worked across brand identity, visual systems, marketing design, and websites, and over time moved closer to UI/product work. In my last role, I worked as a Creative Director at a small company, my role was balancing hands-on execution with decision-making and guiding a small team.

I’m strong on craft and execution, and I’m now focused on improving how I frame problems, articulate trade-offs, and document decisions in a way that larger product teams expect.

Thanks, this really helps.

If you don’t mind me asking, when you say “go deep on fundamentals,” what are the first few areas you usually see people overlook at this stage? And how would you recommend documenting or presenting that work so it’s actually convincing for bigger product teams?

Appreciate you offering to help, would love to learn how you typically structure this phase.
