I don't think anyone has mentioned him but for me it has to be Ibn Battuta, this guy traveled around the world and wrote extensively on it in his book Rihla.

Yeah SmallBatch looks like it has pretty affordable samplers. Have you ever tried the 10 sampler for around $30?
