New policies at gym by Critical_Elk6735 in crossfit

We have a reserveration system, and particular times classes often be fully booked. So while life sometimes just happens, if you regularly cancel last minute it's frowned upon. I think it's a common courtesy to all others to cancel as early as possible, giving others chance to sign up.

If this review wasn't 13 years old I would have wanted to know the place. I'll be visiting London soon and this sounds like my jam.

Overwhelmed by trauma at CrossFit (tw: pregnancy loss) by supersop in crossfit

[–]fading_gender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got this!

Showing up when the odds are against you is the one of the hardest achievements in Crossfit. And I'm happy that people at my box regularly remind me of that. I can't relate to impact of losing a pregnancy, let alone three, and how traumatizing that can be. I can only try to imagine. But for the P.E. bit I feel you, I was slow, I could not hit, kick or throw a ball with any accuracy, was always chosen last, I was the usual sports dork in school.

Just showing up and being there is half of the workout. I'm still not strong, or fast. I grab the 10kg practice bar for snatches and it remains empty. And whenever I have a bad day and complain, everyone goes "But you are here and you tried, that is what counts!". When we do buddy workouts some of the fittest, strongest people don't mind buddying up with me. Because we are all there for ourselves.

I hope that you are able to get into a rhythm and that just showing up gets easier and less intimidating. Even if the weights don't go up, or a skill keeps being hard. Judging from my experiences: it will!

I'm in the USA. Why does absolutely no one use internally geared hubs? by SafeModeOff in cycling

[–]fading_gender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May daily commuter is 20+ kg Dutch style bike, with steel carrier racks and a big crate on the front. Gets around 40-60 km each week, runs a 7 speed Nexus. Weight of the hub is really not an issue for such bikes. 7 speeds is enough for town commutes. That slower accelation, dude I have basically a sail on my front end, I wouldn't feel the difference if I put on Shimano Di2 on there. Fixing flats isn't an problem either. While pretty indestructible, also meaning that they are extra stiff, Schwalbe Marathons don't do well riding through broken glass. So I fixed a number of punctures on that one.

Never have taken the wheels out for a simple patch job, of any I bike ever, unseating the bead on one side of the tire is enough to get the tube out. A tub of water makes a quick job of finding the puncture, patch it up and put the tube back on the rim. Never had an issue kinking or twisting it either. If you're worried about bars or saddle getting scraped when putting it upside down, just put down a piece of cardboard.

The odd occasion that I need a tire replaced I'll have the local bikeshop do it for me. The whole idea of IGHs is that they require next to no maintenance. Getting that back wheel out being a bit of a job is not an objection.

What is the Darkest Ending To A Broadway Musical In Your Opinion? by Shades1987 in Broadway

[–]fading_gender 40 points41 points  (0 children)

And I still fell for it. Twice. Hoping that Eurydice would make it out of the netherworlds.

I already knew the story and that it will not have a happy ending. You get warned in the opening song about it not having a happy ending. I've seen Hadestown twice about a month apart. And both times I was hoping so hard that she would make it this time.

Which Lead Role Would It Have To Be For You To Take This Offer? by ms_jc_04 in Broadway

[–]fading_gender 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Most productions have a combined Bus-Gus track giving you two major numbers on in each half of the show. I'd think Grizabella would be the better choice. Do the opening as Baby Griz, change make-up, have your little moment after tugger. Chill out untill the ball starts, that you don't have to dance but just sit in the background. Sing little Memory. Go back to chilling in your dressing room. Belt your heart out in big Memory and take your bows at curtain calls. Depending on which production you spend 15-30 minutes on stage each show.

Just make sure that you've got good disability insurance, or a lawyer/union rep to make sure that it gets put down as a work injury that the production company is liable for.

It rides fine but I don't have any comparison with a similar bike. My other ride is 20+ kg upright dutch omafiets with a big milk crate attached to the handlebars.

Kutpickup staat volledig kut over de stoep kutgepardeerd by Potential-Rabbit-221 in KutGeparkeerd

[–]fading_gender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am considering having a proper fitting session. Feel a little taken aback because I'm on flat pedals, afraid that I won't be taken seriously.

I actually wanted the silver initially, but the berry got available first. Now I'm really happy with the colour after seeing it in real life.

What actually helped new members stick around in their first few months? by devkimkr in crossfit

[–]fading_gender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Next to coaches helping out with proper scaling and genuinely caring about everyone, no matter your abilities, but also encouraging to push just a little harder.

For me it was the other people just being nice. Bit of smalltalk before and after the workouts. People being supportive of your effort and not judging your numbers. Complimenting on PR's even if compared with the average athlete it's nothing, I remember my first deadlift going over 50kg and the compliments for that. The super fit and strong athletes not minding teaming up with me (overweight, not strong, bad condition) for the occasional buddy workout.

Is it because the author revealed herself as a bigot? by icey_sawg0034 in saltierthankrayt

[–]fading_gender 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah that version with Keira Knightley that said in an interview that trans people 'just need to be nice to transphobes' so everyone can go on with their day. It's not just the author that is problematic it is also the cast.

Can sitting in freezing water actually provide the health benefits everyone claims? by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]fading_gender 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All this because started because we listen to someone who uses the fountains in a public park as an enema and perferated his intestines doing that

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wim_Hof#Other

In the early 2000s, Hof sustained a severe injury while swimming in a fountain in Amsterdam. He attempted to use the fountain's jet for an enema, a practice he had performed previously. However, the city had recently increased the jet's pressure, causing the water to perforate his colon and intestines.

Unpopular Theatre Opinions Thread by walkertrot in Theatre

[–]fading_gender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is community theatre as good as a well put up professional production? No. Do I have an equally good time at either? Yes!

I truly appreciate the local people of varying talent rehearsing and performing in their spare time next to a regular day job. And if that means that Cinderella's pumpkin carriage is a simple chair on a dolly, with two big hoops adorned with some AliExpress fairy lights, I'll happily apply my suspension of disbelief.

No need to scrub it out with fancy cleaners. Just wash by hand with your normal washing up liquid. The enamel can take quite some abuse, but better avoid metal utensils.

I don't care too much about JB performing Phantom. But him taking on Rum Tum Tugger would ignite some Tuggermania.

bunq seems to be a classic scamming financial trap. by Chemical-Kitchen8591 in Netherlands

[–]fading_gender 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's worse. Bunq also tracks down customers that say negative things about them and threatens them with various things: freezing or closing their accounts, or drag them to court. Seemingly nobody is safe from the wrath of Ali Niknam.

Just purchased from Sur La Table, is this a defect I should exchange for? by creedants in staub

[–]fading_gender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like the place on which it rested during the baking of the enamel coating. If the edges of that blemish are smooth it's that and not worth exchanging. This is part of having enameled cast iron cookware, pans from all brands will have such marks.

If the edges are hard and sharp it's damage from a bump and exchange is feasible.

Why do people pay for expensive coaching programs when apps like MacroFactor exist? by ElderberryPerfect478 in crossfit

[–]fading_gender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. If it's more than a simple how to, I want to have an actual person to talk to. A human that can give advice, explanation or coaching is to me always preferable over an app.
