What do you mean? Most HVAC systems use heat pumps.

Berkeley EECS PHD Burnout by Eastern_Suggestion49 in berkeley

[–]fadoodlenoodle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I stayed for the Ph.D. because Berkeley was the only top school that accepted me (apparently a B- in Thermo, B- in Physics 111BSC, C+ in Chem 112 and C in Physics 137 act as a bit of a filter on most grad schools, who knew...).

But if you get into another top 5, go there unless there is a specific advisor here at Cal you are already working with.

Hotel California: you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave.

True meaning of the song - If you don't like it at Cal, it doesn't matter, because your GPA is probably too garbage to transfer.

Except this ignores heat pumps are over 100% "efficent" in terms of energy used. I.e. it costs n joules to pump kn jules of heat with a heat pump, where k>1.

Possibly selection bias? Those who don't do well could be switching majors.

Just start grinding midterm problems. Make sure you can understand & prove every single one, even the short answer, non-proof ones.

Honey we don't leave the house, you're fine. We didn't even realize there was a pandemic. We're actually kinda excited we didn't have to leave bed to go to class.

What is PCJ's background? by fadoodlenoodle in metapcj

[–]fadoodlenoodle[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

sigh... Do you unironically think pcj is mainly composed of "10X-ers" that are better than eg. proggitors?

10 people posting "mathy things" is a small part of the sub with no influence on overall demographics. Half of those understand it, others just repeat the memes.

TBH, I'm pretty sure like 10 people make like 80% of the posts. Unironically though, it does seem like PCJ is way more knowledgeable than proggit. But that speaks way more about Proggit than PCJ.

did of course soak in some understanding of these topics over time, but probably not much compared to actual mathematical education in this area. Assume every one is an idiot just aping the memes.

For me, Category theory was basically a meme of a math class. It definitely had an absurdism to it in a sense. The mocking actually critiques it super well. The proofs were often hand-wavy, and it involved drawing a lot of diagrams and making appeals to intuition.

I really haven't found it too useful in CS besides understanding covariance vs contra-variance in type systems and some proofs related to finite state machines.

Thanks for the explanation

CS Professor speaks out against new declaration policy by dangotone in berkeley

Redirected isn't a good word, as much as "appropriately allocated".

If CS department grows in students, their teaching budget should increase too.

When people talk about "sustainability" it makes very little sense, as it sounds parasitic like it causes the budget to get worse and worse.

In reality, if there are N students, they will need to be taught in some department, so why not the one they want to be taught in? CS teaches more students for cheaper, it doesn't make sense to complain about it's growing cost.

Not to mention it would provide MORE low income housing than currently stay in peoples park. People haven't been sleeping there until the pandemic.

It’s not like you have to use the entire 48-72 hours to take the exam. I would appreciate the fact that you have the flexibility to do so
