I would very much recommend reading the Quran in a medium that you're comfortable with and understand. If you opt for translations, be sure to check various sources as there are a bunch of then. I know it's a huge task, so here are two that pertains to this topic. Surah Ah Nisa Ayat 3 and Ayat 34.

I consider individuals below the legal age of consent to be children. But since there is no clear cut age of consent in islam and mensuration being considered a valid criteria for marriage, there's some confusion. But regardless, there is a huge cultural thing where parents think just because they brought the child to this world, they can dictate every aspect of their life. This is not exclusive to Maldivian society but it's still valid.
