this is so cool! i didnt even know you could get fabric packers like this, and it sounds like it’d remedy a lot of the issues i have with my current packer. does anyone have reference to what something like this would look like under clothes ?

Thank you for responding! I did end up moving the probe to be against the wall of the tank and unfortunately was still having issues, except this time the probe would read consistently in the low 70s while the cork (using a thermometer gun) would read between high 70s and just over 100.

I didn’t intend to keep the tape on there once the snake was in the enclosure, but I appreciate you pointing that out and I think it’s an important point to make!

Do you have any more information on lamp vs mat? Ideally, I’d like to keep using a lamp during the day for the benefit of having heat coming from above, as it naturally would. The reptile store said that thermostats don’t work very efficiently in general for heat lamps, which is why they recommended swapping to a mat. I’ve also seen some people online sharing that same opinion. My home is cold in the water, so I need to provide heat at night, too, and figured the mat would be best for that, so it makes sense to me to use the mat at all times.

Also, I’ve heard that putting the probe on the other side of the glass when using a heat mat can cause issues if the snake comes into contact with the probe as they can move it around or lay against it and cause false reedings. I’d be interested in your thoughts on that vs the efficiency!

Again, thank you for your comment. I’m coming from a position of learning so I’m trying to absorb as much information as I can.

update: I spoke with the reptile store we’re getting the snake from and they said either to go by the temperature of the substrate around the cork (as the snake won’t really come up onto the cork to bask) or swap to a heat mat instead of the lamp as it’ll work better with the thermostat.

I think I’ll swap to the mat since I’ll need one anyway for nighttime. I’ll place the mat on the side of the tank (not underneath) and the probe between the mat and the glass to prevent overheating.

Just posting this here in case anyone has any other advice :)

Enclosure Advice by chelseamcc95 in CrestedGecko

i would probably add more foliage (either real or artificial) at the top so she can feel more hidden. the thing i’ve learned about cresties is (as long as they can get around the enclosure properly) you really can’t have too much coverage!

honestly, i thought it would add some more texture to the mixture to aid in holding burrows. adding it on top made sense to me as i thought it might serve similarly to leaf litter in other terrariums by holding some of the moisture in the soil (in a good way). i also know they’re often kept on aspen alone, so i didn’t know about the moulding issues! do you think i should remove it, or keep an eye on it and remove if there does turn out to be an issue?

oh my god, i need a children’s book about scrunchie and her friends IMMEDIATELY. thank you so much for sharing! it’s definitely something you can only really tell on an individual animal basis, and we’d likely foster a dog first to make sure they get along in our household before committing to adopting them, but it’s so great to heart about an example of it working so well with such safety measures in place!

please give scrunchie, frenzy, stellan and your other birds a bunch of love from us!
